Not sure if this news was posted here before... Touro has opened a new B&M campus @ Los Angeles, CA. This is the third campus in CA if I am not mistaken. Other two campuses are in Cypress, CA (the online campus) and Vallego CA (medical school)

This is good to see. Being a TUI graduate I hope all of these schools will bring a little name recognition to the Touro name.

    Touro Los Angeles says:

"Touro College Los Angeles, with separate men's and women's divisions, will enroll its first class in Fall 2005. In replicating the Touro College New York flagship model, it affords the opportunity to combine Judaic studies with liberal arts and pre-professional courses in a supportive, Torah-observant environment."

    http://www.touro.edu/losangeles/about.asp

    They also tell us:

"Touro College Los Angeles is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, 985 Atlantic Avenue, #100, Alameda, CA 94501; tel. 510-748-9001."

But the WASC directory doesn't list it:

    http://www.wascweb.org/senior/directories.htm

This raises some questions. It is conceivable that Touro LA is operating under the accreditation of either Touro U. - California in Vallejo or Touro U. International in Cypress. But the Touro College - LA website certainly makes it sound like Touro College - LA is a clone of Touro College in New York and that it's separately accredited by WASC. Unfortunately, its not even open yet.

I recall that Touro University International announced itself with full-page ads in the Wall Street Journal trumpeting its accreditation by Middle States, before that accreditor had even decided on Touro's substantive change application.

Touro seems to enjoy living on the edge. The empire (you can't call it a school any longer) hasn't been burned yet, but it definitely makes me nervous.

    Bill,

Perhaps a call to the college or WASC might provide more productive and accurate information than critical speculation and inferences that Touro is living on the edge, their empire may burn or other reason for nervousness.

I see the expansion and development of a B&M campus in LA and perhaps South Florida (a new Miami Beach Library is now listed on the TC website) as a positive development. What harm is there in serving areas and communities that desire such higher education programs and Judaic study interest?

As a graduate of Touro and faculty, I'm pleased to see them invest in new campuses, medical schools, ABA law schools, libraries, online programs...etc. I'm also quite pleased to see Touro obtain multiple regional and professional accreditations that correspond to their programs, regional presence and growth.

I just do not see how any of this is a bad thing, or how it will do anything but strengthen the recognition and image of Touro, including their online programs.

    Tom
