MS or MBA?

I would like to obtain an advanced degree. However, I am having difficulty deciding which one to pursue. I'm not looking at a career change at this point, but I would like to take advantage of my employer educational assistance. I have a strong interest in Finance to the point it is what I would like to do if I was unable to continue in my current job.

I have been accepted into an MBA program with a concentration in Finance. I am also looking at a MS in Finance program. My thought is that the MS would give me a good foundation for the Finance field as opposed to the MBA. Plus, I figured I could always pursue the MBA after the MS.

Is this a good plan or should I just do the MBA and forget about the MS?

    CF34,

I have a similar interest in finance and plan on going into a finance related field when I change careers in the next couple years. I have decided to work on an MBA (with a finance concentration) first to give me a broader understanding of business. After completion of my MBA I then plan on obtaining a MS in the particular area of finance I intend to work in.

    Good luck in your quest,

    Ray-

How do you like Bellevue? That is where I was accepted for the MBA. From my research, it has a pretty good reputation. Can you give me some insight as to what the classes are like and has it been managable.

I'm looking at Golden Gate for the MS.

    Thanks.

There was a thread awhile back in which someone was trying to decide between an MBA in Human Resource Management or an MS in Human Resource Management. Someone who was already working in human resources chimed in to say that the MBA would be more serviceable if they were looking at a career in human resources. Also, a few years back, after I had finished my MBA and while I was still living in Seattle (1993-2001 time frame), the Dean of the School of Business at the University of Washington advised me that an MS in a business topic would be preferred if one is looking for admissions to a PhD in a business topic.

    CF34,

I can't really give you realistic picture of Bellevue's MBA program because I am in the first week of my first two classes with Bellevue. I took two MBA classes at another school (the school I have my undergrad from) and transferred to Bellevue to expand my education background. I will say...this first week has been a lot of work but I am learning a lot even though I already hold a business undergrad degree.

There is much more interaction with the faculty and other students in the Bellevue program as compared to TUI. I'm very happy with Bellevue so far.

I'll be happy to provide more information after I've been at the school for a longer period.
