My wife works in a library and is looking to get a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree. The only problem is that there are none offered locally so she is looking to complete one via DL.

I am having a hard time coming up with DL MLS programs which are RA and American Library Association (ALA) accredited. My wife and I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks.

    Thanks Ted! :)

You have given us quite a few programs to explore. Up to this point we were only aware of a couple DL MLS programs.

U of I all the way!

I would heartily recommend the University of Illinois for the MLS program. Not only is it one of the finest public universities in the US, but the MLS program in particular is very strong. There is, I believe, a *very* brief periodic (annually perhaps?) residency.

The facilities are amazing -- beautiful building, the largest public-university library in the US (and third-largest university library, behind only Harvard and Yale)...yes, it is my undergrad alma mater, but I have known several graduates of the program who rave about the quality, and have done very well career-wise with the degree.

    Best wishes!

You're not biased are you? ;)

Thanks for the heads up...we appreciate any detail that we can get to distinguish one program from another.

    Ted,

If my wife ever makes up her mind as to what she wants to do with her life with regard to grad school, I'll keep you posted.

I can't say that I have ever been a Marine, but that is where I got the idea for the title of the thread. :D

I went to Florida State. The MS LIS can be done entirely by distance learning.

I am of the impression that the University of South Florida also offers an MLS (or MLS type) degree by distance learning, however I feel the FSU program is better. FSU is a longer program and FSU offers a PhD and USF does not. FSU has decidedly more full time faculty and fewer adjuncts and grad students teaching.

I would assume that most if not all schools now offer at least some component of the degree online. The American Library Association lists all of the accredited programs with links to their websites here .

Now, of those which are ALA accredited, which is the least expensive?
