What good are CEUs and PDUs?

I seem to find lots of certificate programs out there in fields I want to study, but few offer college credit. Instead, they offer "CEUs" or other nonsensical credits. What good does it do me to accumulate lots of CEUs? Is there any place online where I can get a good understanding of all the different credit options for post-baccalaureat learning and how they are useful?

CEUs are useful to people who have some kind of certification that requires ongoing education (which can be documented by earning CEUs). I have taught such courses.

OK, that makes sense. But I assume that the CEUs only count if they are earned via coursework in the specific field, right? In other words, if I got a certificate in Accounting that gave 3 CEUs but my career is HR, the Accounting CEUs might not be accepted by the HR certifying authorities?
