There isn't much info on Touro MBA programs here. Does anyone have any info on its quality, reputation, etc. What I find interesting is that you don't have to purchase books for your classes.

    iquagmire,

I'm currently taking two classes in the Touro MBA program and in my opinion it is a great program. I am learning a ton and the fact that I don't have to buy books is a big selling point. I have to work very hard in these two classes.

However, I have recently transferred to Bellevue University for the sole fact that I want to diversify my educational background (my undergrad degree is from TUI). I start my first two MBA classes at Bellevue University on Monday.

If you don't need a school with name recognition I would say TUI has a great program. Please let me know if you have any specific questions.

Do they use blackboard? Also, do they participate federal financial aid?

How does it work with no books? Do you have to print out the book?

    Thanks!

    Iquagmire,

I do not use federal financial aid so don't have any first hand knowledge, however, this was taken from their website...

    What about financial aid?

TUI distributes federal and state educational financial aid benefits. Please contact [email protected] for information and applications.

They do not use blackboard, all course materials are provided on a CD Rom that is sent to you before each class. They have proprietary web interfaces used for student services and course activities like the discussion forum and uploading assignments.

There are no books whatsoever, all materials are provided on the CD. Video lectures, links to internet resources that you must read, PowerPoint presentations, etc.

Each course is broken down into 6 modules. Each module requires you to study the background material, write a 5 page case assignment and a 3-5 page Session long project. So in the total course you will write 5 Case Assignments (5 pages each) and 5 Session Long Project submissions (3-5 pages each). Module 6 does not have any assignments due but is usually a study of the application of the first five modules.

I will say I have found the lack of books a bit of a pain only because I have to be sitting at the computer to study. I can't take a book and read it while I'm away from the computer or Internet.

The real beauty of TUI is the flexibility you have to work on the course. As long as you meet the submission deadline every two weeks you can work on it whenever it is convenient for you.

If you have any additional questions don't hesitate to ask.

    Remember, TUI is not AACSB-accredited.

Remember, TUI is regionally accredited. Anyways....

I'm an MBA grad and learned a great deal during my time in the program. I actually witnessed the course work get more and more rigorous over time. You will need to apply yourself to get the most out of the lessons and the best grades. Ray's comments were accurate but don't be surprised if the numerous assignments require more than five pages. Dr. Wollan won't hesitate to ask for an eight page case and a six page SLP.

Touro's MBA progressed to a great extent since I joined in 1999. It is rigorous and you will find the faculty to be extremely helpful and student centric.

Touro University International (www.tourou.edu) is a branch campus of the brick-and-mortar Touro College (New York). A not-for-profit, regionally accredited (fully accredited) educational institution by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). It is also accredited by the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) and approved by California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. Touro College was chartered by New York State in 1970.

Feel free to contact Dr. Steven Gold ([email protected]). He will respond to all your concerns and inquiries.

I work for an IT multinational company and Touro's MBA degree had a very positive effect on my professional life. For what its worth, the MNC I work for paid for my MBA.

    Highly recommended!

    Eli

TUI is part of a traditional school. Also the comments about Dr Wollen are right on target; she is tough!!!

    How about the discussion board

    Hi,

I have few more question on Touro. Pls do reply.

    1. Is the discussion board used simply to post questions to Instructors, or do the instrutors use it to create discussions on certain assignments and follow the chapters of a modules.

    2. Are students graded on their postings. Are they encouraged for a minimal number of post for grading. How good/practical do these discussions seem to be on the course.

    3. Are the grades based on these case assignment and Session long project submission or are there weekly quizes and exams.

    4. How many works would an person with an IT, not business background expect to spend in a week.

    5. Being an RA school, are the credits of TUI courses/classes easily transferrable to other accredited schools for another MBA or tranferring to another school to continue MBA.

Any more information on TUI is sincerely appreciated. Thanks,

    Sanjovi

Here are some compiled answers of earlier posting I found on this group...its for the benefit of other newbies posting like me...some of these are cut and paste...

Touro University International has an MBA that tests mastery through Case Assignments and Session Long Projects. It
is not an AACSB accredited school but the work is challenging and I'm learning a lot. I've been very happy
    with TUI so far.

Touro is in fact giving DL education the very best name. I am sure anyone that goes through TUI program can face up with any graduate of any
institution of similar programs. I know the quality of the professors and students. Since you do not attend TUI, I think you ought to allow those of
us that do tell you about it. They have a first class program. Positive things do come out of probation. I have seen it happen and in this
    instance, it is already happening.

Each course at TUI (3 months duration) consist of 6 Modules including the following:
    - 6 Cases
    - 6 Session Long Projects
    - 6 Enhanced Cases or Threaded Discussions
Lectures, presentations, and resource materials are found on the course's CD.
Moreover, included in your tuition, full access to virtual libraries (ProQuest and Netlibrary).

All of the material you need for class is either
    (1) on a CD that is sent to you before class begins or
    (2) on Touro's online library. The library includes thousands of professional and academic
journals as well as books and magazines. The journals, however, seemed to provide the best
research information for the assigned projects. The work was not easy but it was always doable.
It just took some time to learn the new material, research the homework question, and write a
    paper to answer it.

Most students take two classes a session. Doing so would allow you to complete eight courses in 12 months.
Taking sessions off from school is fine. I didn't run into any problems with the faculty, technical support
or administration. Professor always answer questions (usually that same evening) and provided additional
    reading materials.

Touro RA degree program in the US all recognized at every other US school.
(Although some credits might not transfer; that's a different issue.)
I have never heard of an RA degree from the US not being accepted in a another country.

Oveall, Touro's MBA program is very good. I learned a lot

    In Threaded discussions:
The professor raises a good debatable question pertaining to each topic.
Students are invited to participate in answering the question raised and debate it among themselves.
It is customary for the professor to interfere at different intervals of the discussion in order to
give remarks, align the thoughts etc. The Threaded Discussion to be informative and a chance for students
to communicate with each other within the context of a certain topic relevant to a given module.
The discussion is held off-line. Discussions are not mandatory..
students are given the option to do an Enhanced Case (10% of the total grade).

If you need student aid to complete your degree be aware that NCU is ineligible to offer federal loans due to their
being a 100% online university. TUI is eligible to offer federal loans as they are a branch campus of
Touro College. That can make a big difference in cost and affordability.

I just received my first CD from Touro and it looks like I am going to be writing papers every two weeks
and receiving a grade, with possibly some threaded discussion. Is that all?

That is all it is....you'll write a Case Assignment and a Session Long Project every two weeks and participate in the threaded discussion. That will make up your grade.
TUI is a lot of work in just writing papers. TUI is a lot of writing.

At the PhD level, and not at Masters, the TUI courses require interactions with the other class members and
with the professor via Horizon Live sessions and as well via the Threaded Discusssions ...
Which serve an important role and I agree, adds to the learning experience.

    The TUI PHD format is demanding and accomodates people with jobs. The SLP being 4-6 pages is rare;
most of mine have been a minimum of twenty-pages, properly formatted (APA style); with appropriate
refererences. I believe a lot of what you get out of a course is based upon what is asked of you and
what you put into it. Simply copying something down and submitting it for a grade is not learning.
At TUI, I have been asked questions by my Profs. and many I admit that I honestly could not answer appropriately.
The reading assignments (for the health sciences PhD) were lengthy, and at times I wished I could read
a book and answer questions from the prospective of the author. At the higher education levels, one must
perform research and that is what TUI is about. When you finish with your degree from TUI, you will know
how to properly conduct research, defend your writings, and think differently (on different planes).

The TUI MBA program people have never written a minimum of 20 pages for a SLP unless it was a cumulative
    paper in SLP 5 (i.e. MKT501 or MGT599)

TUI MBA uses CDs, no books are involved. TUI uses CD’s for all of their programs
    (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate).

Overall TUI seems to be good for federal employees or people in armed forces, as the tuition fees is comparatively quiet cheap

Ok, could someone post more information on these discussion threads at TUI, as I prefer to make a choice based on this sought of daily intearction among class students. If you know of any other good schools which offer MBA in finance with forced threaded communications,, pls do post. thanks

MBA students are indeed expected to participate in threaded discussions and interact with other students in their class on a regular basis. The course professor provides a topic and questions for each module, which are discussed extensively among students. Students contribute their thoughts, opinions, arguments and experiences surrounding a range of business related subjects and issues.

Professors monitor, contribute and in some cases guide the discussions. Each professor also has the option of recording and embedding a voice comment or discussion directly within the threaded discussion posts. Students simply click on the professor’s voice response icon displayed within the discussion thread.

Professors can view the status of all student paper submission, grades and threaded discussion participation from within their grade book view page. A green checkmark for a module indicates that a student is actively posting and contributing to the discussion for a given module. The professor can then click on any of the green check marks which takes them directly to the individual posts made by each student within the overall thread. Grades are assessed based on the substance, quality, frequency and overall contribution to the module discussion. Generally, the threaded discussion assignments represent from between 10 and 15% of the overall module and course grade.

Again, students are expected (required) to actively participate and contribute to the threaded discussion assignment for each module. However, students may encounter issues (travel, moving, TDY, vacation...etc) that prevent them from actively contributing to an assignment thread. To accommodate these situations, students do have the option of completing an alternate case assignment in lieu of posting to a thread.
