Private security is one of the fastest growing industries after 9/11, but has been pretty much ignored by higher education, except for some elective courses in a CJ program. Good to see that some degree programs are starting to sprout up.

As a cop who, no doubt, answers calls more often than I'll be you'd like wherein some security guard has really screwed-up somehow, I'm guessing a higher educational level -- and better training, just generally -- for security personnel would be something you'd applaud. Just about every cop I know has rent-a-cop horror stories to tell. Better educated security personnel would be a huge public safety issue, I'd think, too.

Just thinkin' out loud... er... well... you know... out keyboard. ;)

I'm in my 18th year, and to say that the quality of the average security guard has improved since my rookie year would be a major understatement. I think 9/11 opened a lot of people's eyes to a lot of different things, one of them being the fact that the police can't be everywhere at every moment.

Large corporations are now demanding their security people meet pretty stringent qualifications, and are paying them accordingly. A perfect example is Gillette in Boston. Now, I realize that Al-Queda probably doesn't have the Mach3 Turbo on their list of priority targets, but the company is a symbol of American capitalism, so who knows?
