Getting Your Degree & Large Families....

I read an interesting thread in which a mother of 5 was interested in getting her degee. "FIVE CHILDREN??" Yes. Five. And, contrary to popular opinion it is possible, in fact, relatively easy to get a degree with five children. My A.A. in liberal studies was obtained almost exclusively online, at our local community college, and I had 5 kids ages 14, 10, 6, 6, and 1, when I started. I went the traditional route and did most of my Junior year with 6 children. I now have 7 children. (Prior to this all were planned, but this newest member of our family was a surprise.) I find that I don't want to go immediately back to school. I have 30 s.h. left (33 if you count tesc 6 s.h. comp. requirement). I intend to test out for the rest of my sociology degree. Most of my bachelor's has been done non-traditionally and quite frankly my online classes were much more educational and rewarding than my traditional classes. Not to mention I could breastfeed in my underwear "in class". Not something I recommend trying in the traditional classroom! So yes, it can be done. In fact, IMO distance learning is the ideal degree path for most SAHM's (or SAHMD's) whether they have 1 child or 7 (or more). Sincerely, Laura

 

This past semester at the local state university that I attend, a young new mother did just that. She came to class in her pajamas (which isn't as unusual as most would expect) with new baby, and did in fact breastfeed that baby during exams.

Seems she had tried to convince an arrogant professor that she needed a special concession to take her exam in private -- he refused. So she dealt with it. Dealt with it very well I might add.

 

GOOD FOR HER!!!! The older I get the more I realize that getting an education and getting a degree are two entirely different things. Unfortunately, some of the gatekeepers (professors) take a great deal of pleasure in making it more difficult than it has to be. I too nursed in my traditional classrooms... though not in my underwear! LOL I did however show up to a final exam in oversized pink fuzzy bunny slippers on the dare of one of my favorite teachers. He gave me an A-..... attendance in traditional classrooms always seems to bite me in the tush.
