    Greetings to all,

My son had served his enlistment in the army and now is working for a military contractor in the Middle East. He had been trained by the army to work in the field of satelite communications (I know next to nothing about this field).
My son would like to work towards an Associates degree but he is not sure on how to proceed. I would like to know if there are any DL programs in the field mentioned above or would it be better if he enrolled at TESC?

    Thank you,
    Maria

    Maria,

The only associate's level distance learning Communications degrees that I could find were Charter Oak State College (www.cosc.edu), Southwestern Assemblies of God University (www.sagu.edu), and Thomas Edison State College (www.tesc.edu). Throw in Telecommunications and you have Champlain College (www.champlain.edu) and Pace Universioty (www.pace.edu). Hope some of this helps.

    Maria,

there a few Masters degrees in this area (normally titled Space Studies) My recommendation would be to contact Florida Institute of Technology or the University of North Dakota as they might have some insight into the associate/bachelors level feeders into their programs.

The Army normally has a split in this field (maintenance, operations, tactical, fixed, etc...)so your son needs to go to the ACE website:

    http://www.acenet.edu/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Military_Programs&Template=/TaggedPage/TaggedPageDisplay.cfm&TPLID=56&ContentID=8754

and look for the MOS and or other courses he took to see what ACE recommends for the appropriate credit.

If he has the appropriate electronics training he can make a decision on which program to follow, but there are several good telecommunications tracks available at the bachelors level including Murray State and Fort Hays.

I worked for over 20 years in the military in terrestrial and space based communications and the Satellite career field has many applications. Depending on what he is doing with the contractor a business degree with a concentration in networks might be beneficial. I found that Empire State College has some nicely done concentrations and courses that might appeal.

Feel free to PM if needed.

A10 - My thanks to your son for his service. I would suggest that he seriously consider a Bachelors degree program over an Associates degree program. In the long run it will serve him better. There are several programs on my list.
    Andrew Jackson University
    Montana State University-Billings
    New York Institute of Technology
    Old Dominion
    University of Maryland University College
There are non-US programs as well but perhaps that's better left for another inquiry. Best of luck.

Hope DesElms doesn't sue me for copyright infringement, but:

Going into the back room (PM and email) defeats the purpose of this board.

Or, as my fellow Lutheran theological buddy would say:

Pass the information. Never mind the zebras.
