OK, I just finished the online graduate certificate in Business at UMass Lowell. Now, instead of hopping right into an MBA program, I want to get a few quick, non-credit certs under my belt in order to land the next job. I am looking at the Gatlin certificates offered through various schools. I am considering the "Six Sigma Green Belt" certificate. When I did the UMass program, I did an Operations Management class that delved into the realm of Six Sigma and found it interesting. My question is, what sort of job requires such skills as Six Sigma Green Belt? Does anybody around here use those skills in their job?

I do! First, I think everybody uses them in their job. It teaches you a lot of great stats tools, and how to anlayze data, but most importantly to look at the data..... make determinations of what is going on by the data (not gut feel).

Six Sigma is used most in large scale production centers, (auto industry), but any industry with the need for operational excellence. I used mine in Aerospace.

Though I am in marketing, it is very helpful anywhere. It is also a great tool for the resume. In the pharma industry (sister company to the aerospace company), we were asked by a customer if anybody on the team had Six Sigma training, and I did, and I think it was surprising to some, as the marketing field not known for the Six Sigma training, but it has made me think of analysis in a different way.

If you go up on monster, you can do a search of companies looking for six sgma training specifically, there are lots out there.

Six Sigma is the standard at allot of companies. General Electric requires all there employees to attend SIX SIGMA training within a year of employment (at least the IT folks anyway). Also Bank of America has Green Belts and Black Belts that float across the county running projects. Their primary role is Project Management. Six Sigma has become the standard leaving Total Quality Management in the dust. You would do very well to have Six Sigma under your belt. :D

Excellent information so far, thanks for the replies. I guess my other concern is the fact that I have no experience in project management. I am trying to make a career change from IT and break into a management-level position on the administrative side of things. With no experience running projects, would I be wasting my money ($1400) getting Six Sigma Green Belt at this point or would it open some doors for me as an inexperienced "newbie" so to speak?
