I am interested in their security courses and read the following on their website regarding two of their courses and "accreditation"...

    1) "Certificate in Security Management, accredited by the City & Guilds of London Institute"

    2) "Diploma in Security Management, accredited by the NCFE – National awarding body"

    http://www.caltrop.co.uk/quali.asp

Is this "accreditation" legitimate and is it widely-recognised in the UK and even internationally? Any assistance with these questions would be appreciated.

Here is a couple of links you may find useful.
    http://www.dfes.gov.uk/recognisedukdegrees/annex4.shtml

This is a link for Recognised Bodies
Institutions with their own degree awarding powers

    http://www.dfes.gov.uk/recognisedukdegrees/annex5.shtml

This is a link for Colleges and other institutions offering courses leading to a degree of a recognised body.

Caltrop is not listed in either.

Although from my quick gander at the sight I did not see where they were trying to offer degrees at least in the traditional sense. I may have not looked hard enough though.

It is not unsual for a company to offer and unaccrediated certificate or diploma in a speciality area(e.g. Microsoft Windows). It does appear that is all this company is doing.

They may not be listed because they offer "Certificate's" and "Diploma's" not degrees.

I just found this interesting write-up on Caltrop...

The distance-learning and taught courses provided by the Caltrop College are towards the Certificate in Security Management (City & Guilds accredited) and Diploma in Security Management (NCFE accredited) professional qualifications of the International Institute of Security (IISec).

These awards are recognised both nationally and internationally and the Caltrop College is the IISec approved manager and provider for both courses levels, helping students through to either Member (MIISec) or Diplomate (Dip.IISec) status.

Importantly, these qualifications also satisfy the criteria of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) which was set up by the Government to impose minimum standards on the private security industry, in terms of both monitoring and training. The SIA is introducing licencing for all security professionals, including directors, managers, supervisors, officers, consultants and investigators working within the various security sectors.

ODL QC was founded in 1969 as the Council for the Accreditation of Correspondence Colleges.

Set up at the request of government, it continues to benefit from governmental support and cooperation, though it is now an independent body, and a registered charity.

For 30 years the Council has helped to enhance quality in education and training, and to protect the interests of learners, through the accreditation of open and distance learning providers.

The following is from the British Council Denmark about the above source...
