    Dear all:

From its recent literature, Newport University states that they are currently upgrading their programs, and are planning on increasing its tuition for the first time in seven years.

It states that its Psy.D programs still qualifies for students seeking CA clinical psychologist licensures before 2008. On a separate matter, they claim the tuition raise is due to their pursuit of accredittation.

This is certainly good news for all. I just hope they don't seek accreditation from ACI or WAUC. [IMG]

Well, I hope that this is a legitimate attempt.

If I remember correctly, Newport has a California school that issues one or two degrees, and a Hawaii "school" (that is in the same office) that issues all of their other degrees.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for legitimacy.

Thye have sales agents globally and we come across their 'graduates' regularly from India and Pakistan - fortunately in Post graduate areas, so we just politely advise them of what it is and ignore the degree. Unfortunately most are GENUINELY duped and think that the university is just below Stanford in ranking - many have chosen it over the Wyoming based alternative, Preston. It is interesting that they post NO faculty apart from the boss of ech dept.

    Dear all,

Newport claims that they are pursuing DETC accreditation.

Let's hope this is not another sales pick-up-line.

    Cheers,

The DETC has no "correspondent" or "candidate" status. Any school can be pursuing DETC accreditation; it doesn't mean a thing.

It means that maybe they've come to their senses and to forget about that ISO quality assurance bullshit.

It also means that if their accreditation attempt is legitimate and sincere, then we may have another alternative bearing authetic accreditation.

    Cheers,

Of course, they are likely to have to drop or modify their Psy.D. program. As far as I know, there are only a few "experimental" doctoral programs approved by DETC.

Not just that. Newport offers doctorates in other areas. They also operate Newport University International (listed with a South Dakota address). The website lists operations in 26 countries, but offers only one clue as to its academic methods:

"The Director/Administrator of each country is responsible for facilitating the student through the academic process."

Twenty-six little franchises offering degrees in just about anything at any level, all beyond the reach of California Approval. Let's see DETC reconcile that!

You're correct. Newport would need to drop their doctoral programs to proceed with DETC. Unlikely.

Since they have a correspondence law school, they cannot seek WASC accreditation. I don't believe they have any other DOE recognized accreditation options.

    Peter,

According to Newport's website, the school is state-approved by the state of California, which should mean that all degrees from NU, whether the student lives in the US or abroad, would be considered a US state-approved degree.

Why would a state-approved Newport degree be "ignored," and a state-approved Century degree be recognized? I guess I am confused as to what the criteria for recognition in your field is, since both schools are state-approved. This post is not intended to be sarcastic, I seriously do not know what the difference would be.

    Regards,
    Russell
