I posted on this board several months ago, trying to find a school to obtain my bachelor's degree. After searching several schools, I finally started at the end of April. I chose Texas Tech University. I have enrolled in their Bachelor of General Studies degree. Being a working mother of 5 children, this is rather challenging but I will not give up. My quest has finally begun.

Wow! 5 kids and college. I am pulling my hair out with only 2 (and college, work, Silicon Valley life, etc)

Congrats and I am sure you will make it!

You must be joking of course?

Have you got any credits already or are you starting from scratch.

I don't mean to discourage you but let me share the following. In my experience it is taking:

    1) Much more time thatn I expected.
    2) Much more money than I expected.

The good news is that you can get your Bachelor's entirely by testing out and there are good support resources , including this forum to help you out.

I can't see you doing it thru regular school if you really have 5 children to take care of...

And I can't see the point of your post at all.

Do you honestly think that this lady hasn't faced challenges? Or put thought into this? Or do you just figure that your personal prescriptive levels of stamina and enterprise are normative for everybody?

    Gnuts.

    Getting your BS Degree

Mom of 5, how old are your children? Of course this will be a challenge but it IS possible!

I "only" have 3 children but they were ages 1 month, 2 years, and 8 years old when I started college. I started from scratch 12 years after graduating from high school. The only course I ever "tested" out of was one Clep test for three credits which actually did meet a NY State requirement for teachers. I did not work full time then but I did work part time at jobs where I could take my children (milking cows and cleaning houses, which I truly hate doing!) and went through a divorce not long after starting college. I did enroll full time in college even though my advisor thought it would be impossible for me to keep up while raising such small children. She did not even realize that I got little or no help from my husband and I was soon to be single! Money was tight but Empire State College was quite reasonable for an In-State student and I was eligible for State and Federal Grants. In fact, all my costs were covered up until I had to enroll in some "traditional" classes at local colleges because my goal was to be a teacher and this was the only way to meet all my requirements at that time. Then I had to pay babysitters and borrow money to pay higher tuition and it was a little difficult but I made it and so will you! Getting my BS was only the beginning. Now I'm remarried, my kids are grown and I'm working on my Ph.D.

    Support

I really appreciate all the support you all have shown. I know it will not be easy, but nothing in life is. I am starting without any college credit, so it will be a long journey but I am up to the challenge. I do some work on the weekends and some on my lunch break at my job. Yes, I work full-time also. I have a very supportive boss. I have approximately 12 years left before I can retire. So, I have plenty of time. I will try to post from time to time, to let everyone know of my progress. Thanks again everyone. I really appreciate all the encouragement.

    Uncle
I am still trying to figure out this guys post as well.

Anyway --- kuddo's to Mom. Life is a challenge, and if she is able to balance her kids with employment and education, I wish her all of the best.

BTW Mom: You have a vast resource of talented individuals on the board. They have helped me more than once. If you need any assistance, just ask.

Well, I really wasn't talking to you. But if you are the official censor here I think you are wasting you time.

Please send me some materials when you are through with your problems with other people's free speach. Also if as from this moment one is obliged to post whatever you like in this forum only. Thanks.

I have to admit - I was also confused as to the point of your post.

M5...don't get discouraged by what some posters may post. Just do your best and you "Will Makeit." :D

Yeah Unk, get your problems with "people's free SPEACH" stuff under control! You oughta know betta! hehehe!

    Dear "He won't make it",
There are a whole BUNCH of official censors here and if you have to be that negative to a lady who is doing her best and just starting her journey, just keep it to yourself. Or face the same negativity. That's the DI way.

Your way of "speaching" is quite nice, but please do send me the writer's manual so that I don't make the mistake of speaking my mind again just in case the censors fall on me for lack of anything better to do.

Not joking, young fellow, not joking at all.

    My dear Master* Will,

I am no censor. Surely you do not actually believe that any disagreement with you constitutes censorship? Your post was demeaning, slightly sexist, and unwarrantedly discouraging. I have many better things to do--such as encouraging people in their distance learning endeavours, trying to ward off the lies of millists and shills, and oozing general bonhomie--than to "censor" you. That is the job of our moderators, should you violate the TOS. M5 has given your churlish post exactly the right amount of attention she ought to have done, so I am happy. The whingeing cry of censorship is the waving of the bloody shirt in these latter days. It will get you nowhere in this eminently reasonable company. I remain,

    Yours bemusedly,

    J. Preotul
