Nothing new here. This isn't to be confused with MIGS. MIIS has been around for quite some time. BG14 says they have a nontraditional residential master's, but gives no details. OT, however.

The Monterey Institute of International Studies has been in existence for many years. It is located in Monterey, CA USA, not Monterrey, NL Mexico.

MIIS is well known in California, in the wider business community and in the foreign service.

It is actually quite prestigious. It is also very expensive, though I think that most of its students have their tuition paid by their employers. One of their specialties is full immersion language courses that are given to ranking corporate executives being assigned abroad.

In addition to the international politics and economics programs, they also offer an array of international business programs and a very interesting program in proliferation studies, treating proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. They have a research center in that subject, and when countries like Pakistan blow off atomic bombs, MIIS is one of the places the press go to get interviews from the experts.

MIIS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

When MIGS first surfaced, I confused it with MIIS. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the intention in choosing the "MIGS" name.

BTW, Monterey is kind of a language-instruction center, since the US Army's foreign language school is located right down the road from MIIS in the presidio of Monterey. That school employs a similar high-speed full-immersion method, and trains military officers, diplomats and intelligence personel.

Not according to the MIGS president, Armando Arias. The CEU is located in Monterrey, Mexico, hence the name.

Arias is very familiar with this issue; he's a department chair at CSU Monterey Bay.

BTW: MIGS has dropped all mention of either "MIGS" or their Florida location. (See the MIGS thread for a post about this.) Nothing else has changed. The phone number still rings in Florida and MIGS is owned and operated by the same people. Considering their past dealings with the truth (not to mention the law), this stinks.

  5. My goodness, do you boys post all over the place? Come, come, this is just not good enough for scholars, but then you are American scholars aren't you? Not always the brightest, but then that comes from your sloppy system i suppose.

Well, not being one to criticise, I must quietly ask you Mr Douglas - dear me it seems awfully cheap to use the name 'Rich' don't you think? - whether you are the typical case of the aggrieved ex employee? It does colour ones attitude my boy, so I would watch it if I was you.

I was not an "employee." (That term has statutory requirements that I did not meet). I did research for them in order to receive a break on tuition. I did so for a year, but did no coursework with them. I worked for free. In fact, expenses incurred by me were borne by me. I received no renumeration from MIGS, either in cash or in kind. (Actually, not true. Dr. Arias picked up a breakfast check after one meeting.) My departure was on my terms (I told them "goodbye.") and with a great deal of joy and relief. I'd much rather be on the correct side of discussions like these, instead of having to support the MIGS effort in spite of them.

Since you use your academic title, would you mind sharing its source? I hope that isn't too personal. Certainly not more so than your attempts to insult me.

Why do you insult American scholars so generically? American scholars are among the largest groups to receive Nobel laureates--which is recognized internationally.

Hi, Rich. Obviously I'm not privy to what the MIGS founders' thinking was. I'm just saying that the similarity in names between the Monterey Institute of International Studies and the Monterrey Institute of Graduate Studies confused me at first.

And the fact that Dr. Arias' office at CSU Monterey Bay is less than ten miles from MIIS suggests that the similarity was probably recognized by him.

To be fair, I believe that Armando was hired well after Sheila had already established and named the place.

And also to be fair, Dr. Arias seems very well qualified, as do all the faculty listed on the MIGS/CEU website. I just don't know what they do if MIGS has no students.

Arias was indeed brought on board after the Mexican connection was established. The Monterey/Monterrey situation is a coincidence.

Dr. Arias is very well qualified to head up this operation. But he does not run the school from day to day. In fact, he has almost no impact on operations at all. Those responsibilities lie with Bruce Forman. And anyone who's dealt with him can tell you why MIGS has done the things it has: naivete combine with arrogance, topped off with an unhealthy dose of rudeness.

As for no students, the slight sarcasm of that statement is very well put. Of course MIGS has students (despite Serna's denials of such). It doesn't have many, but it has them.

Fact: MIGS is very much as it was, and operating out of its Florida office. It promotes itsef, enrolls students, and conducts academic operations. All from Fort Lauderdale. And all without the permission of the state of Florida. It is owned separately from the CEU with an agreememt with the CEU to operate these programs. It appears to be authorized by the Secretary of Education in Nuevo Leon to do just that. The CEU, as a member of the higher education system in Mexico, meets GAAP. Degrees it issues should be acceptable to decision-makers here in the U.S. (as far as degrees from any Mexican university you've never heard of would be). We do not know if degrees issued through study with MIGS will be properly issued.

Opinion: The "Florida feint" they're currently conducting is reprehensible. [IMG]

I'll respond to any other comments about this in the MIGS forum, if at all.

In fact, I just got the most amazing e-mail from MIGS, the text of which I'll just post on the MIGS forum.

  13. Rich, my dear lad, I am glad that you asked that question as did dear Russell. Have you boys ever thought of coming to Australia - i could introdcue you around if you know what I mean ;-)

But I will be brief. I will answer the latter firsly.

I do not need to work. My family have not been poor for several generations and fortunately the bulk of the offspring have been highly intelligent females, either not attractive enough to marry, or more attractive to their own sex. Consequently I hold most of the accumulated wealth and proerties in Africa, UK Belgium, Canada and South America intact. In addition to this I have been blessed with above average intelligence, and have sufficent income from discreet royalties alone, to indilge Michael in whatever pleasures he desires. You see he is but a lad, and I an old man.

And my qualifications? Let;s just leave it like this. My university has a Papal charter. I was able to tear myself away sufficently long enough from the peasures of youth with my own kind and status to do some studies from time to time. The results alarmingly attracted certian epople with brollies and bowler hats. They offered to give me the lifestyle i preferred whci I pursued with vigour and did also study occasionally. In the course of this diversion that study becomes to some of us, I made some remarkable discoveries that were immediately locked away from prying eyes as were my research papers. I am sorry about this, but I know your wishes to examine theses and disseertations but in my case you wont have the classification required to read it, not will any of you have the ability to understand it. It is all about control, making things go faster, and the goodies and the baddies - just stick to Ludlum, Cussler and their types as they are about your level.

    Apologetically,

    You friend

It is just Peter French. I would've stayed quiet if this nonsense had stopped. But the moderators allowed it to continue, so.....

Let's get back to the issues, shall we?
