i was initially interested in biology from excelsior, but now i am looking at health care administration as a major at cosc.this bcoz i am not all that interested in bio to take it as a majot and go deep into it and secondly bcoz many here think that a major in bio through DL is a bad idea.
i have 3 credits as i passed the clep natural sciences. i plan to get 9 total and then just enroll in COSC.
it would be very helpful if someone here who has gone this route helps me out.
    thanks

    Saby,
Is a position in health administration your goal? What kind of job will you ultimately want in healthcare? A BS from COSC will certainly help, but you will also want to look into professional certifications such as the one offered by the American College of Healthcare Executives or (if like me, your interest is in managing private medical practices) the American College of Medical Practice Executives. I'll tell you, the field of medical practice management is wide open, and most of the competition for practice management positions lacks a college education. There is also no shortage of poorly run medical practices (insert your own Dr's office horror story here). Just some things to think about from someone in the HA field.

Oh, and as a disclaimer, I am a member of the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE) as well as the national Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and the Connecticut MGMA so, if I seem to have a practice management bias, that's why.

    Hi
    Thanks for your reply,
I am mainly interested in Public Health or in Physical Therapy. what do u think about these careers? Private Medical Practice Management also seems very interesting.
Basically right now all i know is i want to get into the health care field and am mmore inclined towards phsical therapy which is only at masters level and 3 years duration.
I still have a long way to go as i have not even enrolled in undergraduate. I was interested in Biology from Excelsior but after options at COSC,i think that would be a better choice,
    i am still confused though

Boy, things sound different in New Haven than here. My wife retired from 20 years in Navy healthcare, the last six years in administration, and has a MHA. She has been looking for healthcare management jobs in the Seattle area for about a year and not having a great deal of luck.

Healthcare Admin jobs in hospitals are extremely competative but, like I said, private practice groups are always on the lookout for quality managers. I've had two offers to leave my current practice for other groups in the last 10 months.

Managing a medical group is not as prestigious or secure as a hospital position, but it pays well and if you're good at it, there are lots of opportunities around.

You could try looking at www.wsmgma.org or on the national MGMA website for practices looking to fill positions in Washington State.
