    Hi All,
I received my BS from Excelsior a few years back and am now almost done with my master's program at another school. I have decided to go back and finish up my BSN as well since I am so close anyway.
I called Excelsior and they pulled my file. They sent me a list of courses/exams I had to take to finish up the BSN. Long story short- I have to take undergraduate level sophomore expository writing. This seems really odd to me since I already have a bachelor's from them, and will have my master's prior to finishing up the BSN. Of course I will bite the bullet if I have to and take the course, but it seems strange to me. I have oodles of research papers I have written for my master's, and lots of undergrad English and lit courses.
Does this seem correct? Any ideas on how to get out of this? Their cd rom course on expo. writing is kinda expensive, and I'd rather not have to take another writing course.
    Thanks,
    Tattoo

Well, it really sounds ridiculous, specially since you already have a BS from Excelsior!
BUT, abiding strictly to what I read in a recent catalog of their's, there are only 5 ways to fulfill the Written English requirement. Summarizing:

    1) Successful completion of an approved college level proficiency examination...(Clep not valid for this)
    2) Successful completion of a college course...
    3) Submission of an official statement of proficiency from a RA institution, from which transfer credit is being accepted, verifying satisfactory completion of its writing requirement <===Now here I'd say that Excelsior SHOULD verify (to itself in this case!)such "completion of it writing requirement" from when you did your BS.
    4) Completion of a noncollegiate sponsored instruction course or program on writing that has been evaluated by either the NY state board or regents National Program...
    5) Successful completion of an Excelsior college Special Assessment examination.
(taken from page 17 of the Business Catalog)

Why are you going back for a BSN and what was your BS and future Masters in?

Just wondering why you going backwards. Professional benefit????

    BSN

Most definitely professional benefit. In the current healthcare environment, an RN diploma is not enough. There are nurses out there who have Master's and PhD's in Nursing. My BS is in Liberal studies, and my Master's will be in Criminal Justice, which is relevant to my current profession as a psychiatric nurse manager. If I get the BSN, I will be much more marketable so it's worth it. And if I have to take an undergrad writing course, so be it I guess. :(

Unless Excelsior is stating that you actually have to take a course, I believe all you need is credit in Written English.

If you don't have a real desire to sit and take a course I suggest taking an exam to meet this requirement. The one that I took, and that Excelsior accepted to meet my Written English requirement for my BS is located here:

    http://www.tesc.edu/catalog/tecep.php?CourseCode=ENC-101

It is extremely easy (see my site for tips on this exam). The only trick is that you need a local college to proctor it for you. This may or may not meet your needs as you state you need Sophomore writing class (they do have ENC-102 that may meet your needs...haven't taken that one).

Otherwise, take a look at Excelsior's English Comp version (ECE #454). These exams can be taken at any Thomson Prometric (www.2test.com for the nearest center). From Excelsior's site it states:

"BS (Nursing) - - Written English Requirement - English Requirement Satisfied - Lower Level"

As you have already taken Masters level coursework it would be unreasonable to assume that you don't already have undergraduate-level written English skills!

I'd check with Excelsior to see if the above can meet your requirement. Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Mark

Thank you Mark for the helpful information. They did give me the number of the course they want me to take. It is Excelsior's ENG*231, professional writing skills CD-ROM course. I also have to take a 1 credit course in information literacy.

That makes it clear. I thought that you liked punishment. Good luck!

  8. The InfoLit requirement is new as of 2004, so everyone needs to take that - I heard it only takes a few hours online.

However, I would still challenge why you need to take this via a course as opposed to an exam. 12 months ago Excelsior didn't offer any courses....
