Does anyone know if college algebra is the minimum level accepted by COSC for their math requirement in general ed? If they are flexible in this regard would this class from LSU work? We have a friend taking this class and we could save on the books if it would work. thanks, clint
Charter Oaks will take the CLEP College mathematics. It isn't a difficult exam. I used this Comdex boook http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1560301767/qid=1114002548/sr=1-10/ref=sr_1_10/103-6892918-6116620?v=glance&s=books One weekend of working through the examples in the book and I aced the CLEP with a 71.
Yeah, I know about the cleps. We live in Estonia, however, and that makes clepping a little difficult. So I just need to know if this course would work for the math requirement or at least as an elective or something. since it is available to us, we will take it if it is useful. thanks, clint
I am enroll in COSC now and about to graduate in May 05 with a AA degree. They accepted my College Algebra class for their degree math requirement. I believe this is probaly the bear mininium that will be accept. They will not take any development math.
I just reviewed Charter Oak's website and the course you were looking at. Charter Oaks simply specifies: Q: Analytic and Quantitative Reasoning and Data Interpretation (Q) - 3 credits* College-level mathematics LSU says: Mathematics 1009, Mathematics for Prospective Elementary School Teachers I, version Q, 3 hours of college credit (freshman level). I think you're good to go, but if I were matriculated I'd ask my advisor before spending the $229. Another consideration might be how you would get the exams proctored...
Math and I do not get along. I took a 100 level math from Piedmont Technical College and it transferred as my only math credit and I graduated, so, yeah, I would think it probably would. Dan B
I WOULD URGE CAUTION! There is a more COMPLETE description of the course here: http://aaweb.lsu.edu/catalogs/2004/courses/ZCH1276MATHEMATICS.pdf I urge you to submit this to COSC Adviser or Regisatrar for an opinion. I went through a similar situation 1 year ago with COSC over a math course that I took in 1974. I had to get THAT university registrar to find the course description in their 1974 course catalog and fax it directly to COSC. They approved it for credit. PLEASE contact COSC with this course description from the CURRENT LSU CATALOG: http://aaweb.lsu.edu/catalogs/2004/courses/ZCH1276MATHEMATICS.pdf BEFORE YOU SPEND A PENNY: PLEASE BE SURE THEY WILL TAKE IT. Wishing you good luck and all of God's blessings on your journey!!!!!!
No proctoring is no problem. This won't be the first LSU class my wife has taken while here in Estonia. And I expect that even if COSC won't take it as meeting the math requirement, it would accept it as an elective. I really just wanted to know if it would work for the math... BTW, if you live internationally, the LSU courses cost an extra $50, so the price is $279 per 3 hour course. Still not bad... clint
