Please explain the Carnegie Foundation

    It is a "think tank" of highly educated professions. Somewhat on a higher level than the Heritage Foundation (IMHO). Stanford U has a simular foundation of propeller heads

    Thanks for the explanation.

    What does it mean when a university describes themselves as "one of only 101 public universities with a Carnegie/Doctoral Research-Extensive distinction?"

    According to the Carnegie Foundation web site:

    "Doctoral/Research Universities—Extensive: These institutions typically offer a wide range of baccalaureate programs, and they are committed to graduate education through the doctorate. During the period studied, they awarded 50 or more doctoral degrees per year across at least 15 disciplines."

    Is this a big deal for an institution to be classified as such and why?
