I am a working Guidance Counselor interested in getting "certification" in psychometry (giving psych tests for school psychologists)--my county doesn't require any certification, but having some kind of certificate would put me in a very good hiring candidate position in a year or two --anyone know of a distance certification program for this, not really looking for a Specialist or PhD...?

You might also want to look up the website of the National Association of School Psychologists. The American Psychological Association Division 16 is for doctoral level school psychologists. NASP is the professional association of master’s degree level school psychologists. If I ‘get’ your question, you’re looking for training in test administration but not interpretation.

This is not accurate. NASP represents all levels of school psychologists: masters level, Ed.S., Psy.S. and doctoral level. Very few school psycs are APA members. NASP membership represents the vast majority of school psychologists.

I'd be interested in what state you live in. I'f I'm not mistaken, I believe only a few states employ psychometrists in the schools. In Iowa for example, there are no psychometrists working in schools. All assessments are done by school psychologists. I would personally not recommend distance learning for psychometrics. You really need supervised practice with feedback as well as course work. Giving psyc. tests such as the Wechsler scales can tricky to administer correctly especially if you have an anxious, oppositional, ADHD, or Bipolar test subject. One needs to make a lot of important decisions on the spot that can make or break the validity of the administration of the test. One also needs to be a keen and skilled observer of children's behaviors, reactions and problem solving style when administering psyc. tests. In many cases, these observations are more important or as important as the scores themselves and are critical for informed interpretation.

    Hi,
I have the same question. I recently learned of a psychometrist position in my school district and want to apply for it. I teach Language Arts in this district and have my Master's in Adolescent Literacy and Technology. I need certification not a degree. Any suggestions for a test for this?

Psychometrics is both an education and a mental health field, and it's very important that you look into requirements and/or standards for the profession in your district, and state.

Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T, formerly the University of Missouri–Rolla) has a distance learning Graduate Certificate in Psychometrics that might be of note.
