Hey, I'm researching for an M.A program in Applied Linguistics or Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). The catch is I don't have an official 4 year Bachelors degree BUT I have the following qualifications 1) TEFL cert. (w/ honours) 2) Dip. Tech. (Broadcast & Media Communications in Journalism) 3) Extensive volunteer and paid work experience in ESL teaching 4)Good references 5)University accredidation (w/ transcripts.) - By the way, I should mention I'm looking for a distance-ed M.A (via the computer). Time, money and effort are not issues, as I plan to complete this degree p/t over the course of a few years while i work overseas. -For the sake of information, Ive already found one program that seems compatible with my goals and qualifications. Here it is - the University of South Queensland in Australia. -Look at what it says about ADMISSION Option 3 (that's what applies to me) - have a look http://www.usq.edu.au/handbook/current/MAPL.html or read on Admission Requirements To be eligible for admission to the Master of Applied Linguistics (coursework only) applicants must meet the following criteria: REGARDING NOT HAVING A B.A 3. possess an equivalent qualification approved by the Dean on the recommendation of the Coordinator of Program; and * have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement in their previous studies; * have a level of relevant experience in professional education acceptable to the Dean, and * have a level of proficiency in a LOTE or experience in teaching ESL/EFL acceptable to the Dean. -Does anyone have experience or knowledge of what i plan to do? -Anyone recieved and MA without an official BA? -Thanks
You might want to check out the University of New England's online Master of Applied Linguistics. I'm not sure about the entry requirements though.
new eng requires a degree and offers no alternatives. so far only USQ has been forthcoming (so far...)
Aston U If I am correct in reading the admissions requirements, the MSc in TESOL (by distance) from Aston University in the UK would not require a first degree, considering your other qualifications: http://www.aston.ac.uk/lss/english/02_msc/ Cheers, Adrienne
If they hesitate to admit you into the program you might want to propose that they allow you to take a course or two on a provisional basis. Once you have proven yourself capable of academic work on that level they might then grant you "degree-seeking status" (or whatever they call it). The credits would apply and you will have lost neither time nor money. Good luck. Jack
thanks for the tips, i could really use more of these (in case, they decide to hassle me about not having a B.A) USQ and ASTON have both been emailed. Waiting to hear back. (probably Monday).
