I noticed that Fort Hays State University offers a DL "Bachelors of General Studies" with an emphasis in Journalism and Mass Communications. I have been looking for an affordable DL Journalism program, and TESC seemed like my only choice. I like the price of Fort Hays and the fact they accept a lot of credits earned through military training.

Here is my question, how does an "emphasis" differ from a "major"? The jobs I would be applying for with my degree require a Bachelors in Journalism, and I would assume that means a major in Journalism. Would this BSG with an emphasis in Journalism fit the bill? Would it transfer well into a Masters program in either Journalism or Communications? I know there are some Fort Hays graduates here. Maybe you can shed some light on this.

I'm not a graduate of FHSU, but I am a graduate of two RA Universities in Kansas. When I graduated (and it has been MANY years ago), an "emphasis" only required a minimum of 15 credit hours in the subject versus a minimum of 30 for a "major".

I'm sure things may have changed since I graduated from the University of Kansas and from Ottawa University. However, hopefully this gives you some useful information.

As a further aside, when doing my Master of Arts degree, I had to earn 33 graduate hours for my program. Part of those hours included an "emphasis" in a particular subject area which consisted of 9 graduate hours.

So, in a long winded reply, what I'm trying to say is each school and degree will probably have differing requirements, but you can probably plan on five or more courses in the "emphasis" area for a Bachelor's degree and three or more in the "emphasis" area for a Master's degree.

    Regards,

I guess I'll reframe my question as this: does anyone her have a BGS or a Bachelor of Liberal Studies? What have you experienced as far as utility in the workforce? Has it hampered you in job search efforts with employers who specify a particular major?

    Got one

I have never had an issue with my degree when applying for jobs. When it has been appropriate to the position I sought, I have listed the degree on my resume as "Bachelor of General Studies- Law and Society focus" and when not simply as "Bachelor of General Studies". The funny thing is, the jobs that I have gotten since graduating have been the ones that have nothing to do with my BGS focus. Just having the BGS on my resume to satisfy the 4 year degree requirements of the position was enough to get me an interview. My experience and ability to interview well got me the jobs.
