There has been much discussion in this forum on the acceptance of degrees from schools accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council. In the academic world, based on the extensive survey of registrars I did last year, acceptance is roughly 40% of that of regionally accredited. So if one has possible ongoing interest in the academic world, whether for a doctoral program or a teaching position, this could be a factor.

I finally remembered something about the name. Columnist Herb Caen used to give out the "Nikita" award for phrases that sounded as if they had been badly translated from the Ukrainian. Somehow, "University of Action Learning" seems to qualify.

The University of Action Learning (a cumbersome monniker, no?) is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), a recognized accrediting agency. However, it has been demonstrated that degrees and credits from DETC-accredited schools are less acceptable to college admissions officials than those from schools accredited by the regional associations. We do not know how acceptable such degrees are in the workplace. One might, however, guess that a degree from this school would not serve one as well as one from a regionally accredited school.

In 2000, Vault.com published the results of a survey indicating that HR professionals considered degrees earned by distance learning to be less acceptable than those earned via classroom study. The research did not explore the impact of different forms of accreditation, however. It would seem that earning a degree from a school who's only identity is as a virtual program could be less valuable, depending on to whom it was presented.

The University for Action Learning also owns the International Management Centres and the Canadian School of Management. Both are, to be kind, quirky. They seem to rely heavily on UAL's status in the U.S., which is hardly substantial.

You would think these for-profit ventures would at least run their names by some marketing folks and/or test groups before cranking out the paper... the mills have better names than most of them... (yes, can you buy a clue Capella, Argosy, et al.?) [IMG]
