    Online Grads Make the Grade

Our first online students graduated in 2001 with transfer credit from traditional colleges, and they achieved a 100 percent rate on the registered health information technology (RHIT) exam. In 2002 and 2003, our online graduates also achieved 100 percent rate.

Interestingly, the health information technology graduate from pre-online did not pass the RHIT exam the first time she took it in 2003, but passed the second time. The 2004 RHIT exam results are pending, but so far there is another 100 % pass rate. Those 100% pass rates (in addition to other outcomes assessment and program evaluation methods) help measure the success of the online program, and they gave me confidence about the quality of our online courses.

So, what’s next for Alfred States’ online RHIT program? We shall continue to develop online materials that will allow our students to master our course content, and of course we will share all that we create with our fellow educators. (Culled from Advance for Health Information Professionals Magazine, Mar. 28, 2005).

Oko's Comment: This type of performance once again dispels the ill informed notion that online and traditional education are not of the same quality. Professional exams such as those of Health Information Professionals and others continue to dispel such notion which in any case is only very big in this forum that should know otherwise. Just a thought!

Note: RHIT exams are for graduates of Junior Colleges graduates of Health Information program and the professional exams are administered by the American Health Information Management Association.
