    Hello everyone,

I am a new member of this site and am trying to soak up as much information as I can. I am currently a college student at Southwest Texas State University and have about 80 hours. I would like to finish my degree through DL. I was a music major for more than 2 years before I switched to Business. This has left me a bit behind. I was looking at Frederick Taylor University but now I am having second thoughts.

Can somebody please point out some good programs? I do not plan on getting an MBA in the future. Will I have problems getting a job with a degree from FTU or similiar?

I plan on running my own small business but I would like to have a legit degree in case I need to get a good job. Please provide me with some information...this is all new to me.

    Thank you,
    Patrick

My understanding of FTU is that it is legitimate, but it holds no recognized form of accreditation. A regionally accredited degree would be far more useful, and probably just as inexpensive.

First, the Holy Trinity of regionally accredited schools with very inexpensive (sometimes less than $3,000), highly flexible bachelor's programs that can be tailored to business administration: Charter Oak State College, Excelsior College, and Thomas Edison State College.

Second, get thee a copy of Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning, 14th edition. (Disclaimer: I assisted on the research for this book, and my name subsequently appears on the title page. Just so there aren't any shockers...) I count at least a dozen accredited BBAs in the subject index, and a vast number of non-BBA (BSBA, etc.) bachelor's programs in business administration.

    Good luck!

I forgot to address this, and my answer is: quite possibly. It is my understanding that most positions that require a bachelor's also require that the bachelor's be regionally accredited or the equivalent, and there have been situations where someone was fired for using an unaccredited degree to get a job. I'd play it safe by going with a regionally accredited school, and your best bet will probably be Thomas Edison State College (since it's state-run, dirt cheap, offers a BSBA, and is probably the most flexible option out there, granting credit for professional training, etc. etc. etc.).

Good luck, and please keep us posted on your progress!

    Peace,

As you probably already know, Southwest Texas State University is very well respected within the state of Texas and beyond. A degree from SWT will serve you well. Since you already have 80 hours from there, you should investigate the possibility of transfering some DL courses in and finishing your degree at SWT.

  5. Southwest Texas State U offers several distance learning courses -- see http://www.swt.edu/academicaffairs/DIST.HTMl -- so you might be able to continue toward your degree from them.

Texas Tech offers an external Bachelor of General Studies -- http://www.dce.ttu.edu/

Also check into the UT TeleCampus -- support center for distance education and online degrees from the University of Texas System and its fifteen component campuses. http://www.telecampus.utsystem.edu/
