I am surprised that I see very little, if any, mention of the United States Sports Academy these days. They have a three year Regionally Accredited Doctorate with very little residency. Wow! Three years. Has anyone actually attended? Ideas? Comments?

So what do you think? A Masters in Balintawak?

    hehe!

    Yeah, Yeah,

You know, actually, I attended a couple of seminars with Bobby Taboada, a pretty well known Balintawak dude. Enjoyable and instructive.
But I have considered what actual good I might be able to do in the MA community with a Dr. of Sports Management. If anything needs some standardization. . . (It does sound a little silly, eh?) Now that my back is jelly, maybe I could at least do something productive.

    Doug Perry

Sorry, I don't. I am not from Asheville but I live here now. I am originally from St. Simons Island GA, where I taught for a tad over 20 years. When the back finally quit on me I moved up here. I've been to several tournaments here (My son competed). And I know Larry Rogers from years ago, and Larry Rice from JKD circles, but otherwise I have few connections, sorry.
    Thx

No, I don't think it sounds silly. Sports/athletics has become a huge aspect of cultural life here in the US and throughout the world. There is a British Masters degree program in the Sociology of Sports. It's easy for me to imagine a variety of topics for research. Just in MA alone . . . I know that a very common tie-in for me is the number of parents who put their kids into some sort of martial arts program in hopes that it will teach them some personal discipline, how to manage their impulses, their aggression, how to be strong and respectful simultaneously, etc.
Does it work? What are the common elements of these programs that make it work. Etc. Besides all that I think about Jerry Maguire. SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!

    Hi renshi,

I missed the link to Mr. Perry's site. Is it in the favorite links section? I also saw mention of Johnny Pachivis from FL. He has been my center ref for many, many, fights during my career in the 80's, not to mention the US OPEN and the Southern Pro-Am. I've never seen such knobby knuckles. Hehehe. He was a great guy! Real lifetime Martial Artist. He will be missed.

    Hey Jack,
Well, I guess "silly" wasn't the word. I have a student who has converted our (Jodokkdo/Modern Martial Arts) approach to kids martial arts education into a video and publishing phenomenon with the help of a company called "Century Martial Arts Supply". Kimber Hill, one of my fourth degree black belts, has developed the "Little Dragons" Curriculum along with Ernie Reyes Jr. and market's her videos through Century. She has been very suiccessful with her seminars as well and she is certifying folks to teach the program. I have considered helping her and others with worthwile academic curriculea toward ACE evaluation for actual credit. Just an idea.
    Thanks

I wish there was a good program near my home (there are programs, but I'm uncertain as to quality). My daughter will be old enough to enroll soon, but I'd rather she take quality piano lessons than poor MA lessons (for example). Thanks,
    Jack

    Yes

I quite agree. I would rather my daughters do so as well.

Opps sorry I thought I had a link to Major Perry on my site. His site is www.shorinryushorinkan.com He is one of the most knowledgeable and nicest people I have ever met in my 30years in the martial arts.
Good ole Sensei Pachivas was a great guy, I knew him since the mid 70's as we had the same teacher. Im sure you remeber the USKA, United States Karate Association. Pachivas-san had some of the most conditioned hands on the planet. His last few years he looked unrecognizable from the once robust and strong person he was.

    Take care

Here are other 3 year RA doctorates (Doctor of Management and Doctor of Computer Science) offered by Colorado Technical University... with little residency, and no dissertation.

    Thanks

I enjoyed the site. He is certainly an interesting man. I'll have to meet him sometime. Yes, I am familiar with the USKA. I began my Martial Arts study in the early 70's in Columbus Georgia under Young Seon Seo and Young Seon Sil in the older style TKD, got my first degree at thirteen, and went on the study other things, but I was around through the seventies. (a kid mostly). I can remember Johnny Pachivis calling point after point for me at one US Open, ('86) when I kicked an opponent out of the ring several times and three of the corner judges, all from my opponent's school, denied the facts, (as was the wont in those days in Florida under the FBBL). He was a great guy and always called 'em as he saw 'em. I am sad to hear that he died that way.
    Thanks

    From Bachelor's?

Thanks, I am wondering whether these doctorates were from bachelor's to doctorate in three years? Or, does one have to have a master's first? I couldn't find the info in the PDF. Thanks.

    Re: From Bachelor's?

Supposedly 3 years once admitted to the program, regardless of the road to get there.
