Am I wrong in concluding that Nova is by far the lagest of the DL doctorate producer in the US? It seems that the majority of participants on this list are Nova grads. Is that a coincidence or are Saybrook, Union, Walden Fielding, Sarasota etc. tiny by comparison? What percentage of the DL doctoral market does Nova actually control?

Dr. Bear has commented in the past about Nova Southeastern's annual doctoral production. Typically, NSU graduates about 500-600 or so a year. In the DL realm Education is by far the largest (400+), with business graduating about 40, and computer science somewhat fewer. The school also has traditional on-ground doctoral programs in fields like clinical psychology, oceanography and family therapy. The school also awards first professional degrees (these aren't in the 500-600 "doctoral" degrees) - JD's, DO's, DPharms, etc. from traditional on-ground programs.

With an enrollment of 17,000 students, 5,000 total graduates per year (undergrad and grad) and a ranking as one of the 15 largest private schools in the U.S., you are bound to see lots of NSU grads. Other schools enroll far fewer. For example, Union enroll about 2,200 total. Capella enrolls 3,000. Other schools to consider are Walden and Sarasota - but I believe they are even smaller.

This should give a hint of NSU's market share.

    Thanks - Andy

One other note about NSU. NSU ranks third in the number of doctorates awarded to African Americans. The point that this helps make is that NSU provides an avenue for traditionally underserved students to earn advanced degrees.

    Thanks - Andy

    Good afternoon!

Also, Andy, NSU ranks number one in the number of doctorates awarded to Hispanic Americans.

    Andy,

What ever happended to that law suit brought by African American doctoral students over getting as far as the dissertation only to be turned out of the program (??). I remember this had been posted on aed a couple of years ago.

North - I never heard anything more about it. I wouldn't doubt it was settled quietly. As I recall, the issue was improper citation of sources - for which NSU has every right to throw students out. Also, I'd note that lawsuits by students against universities are pretty common.

    Thanks - Andy

    Andy,

If that was the case then I support NSU's decision. The ethics issue is quite clear with all accredited universities up front. In the back of my mind I seem to recall another issue of cheating at a school recently that resulted in someone not receiving their diploma (made national media).
