Anyone on the board that is currently enrolled, or graduated from Argosy University with a DBA. I would like some feedback if possible. Pro's and Con's of the program. Did it help you land a full time teaching job (which is my goal)? Was the program challenging, in particularly the dissertation process? Were you required to publish? Are they expensive? ( I get a discount since I teach for UOP). Can you specialize in a field (I want to do accounting)? I am considering the Atlanta campus. Still considering Nova as well so it will probably be between those two.

Thanks for any input in advance!

    Hello:

Currently, I am enrolled in the DBA in management program at Argosy/Sarasota Campus. In doing so, I am completing my Dissertation (ABD) process and am looking forward to finishing my degree program in the summer of 2005.

Overall, I had a very good experience while attending Argosy. The instructors are wonderful and I must add, very helpful. Moreover, I really enjoyed the residency program where I had an opportunity to meet other students from all around the country. Some of the students that I met are currently teaching at State/Private Universities throughout the country. Also, I met several College Deans.

The following are the responses to your questions. They are as follows:

Pro's and Con's of the program.

Cons: You may get some “Heat” from others who graduated from other well-known Universities. However, things are changing and this will not be an issue in the future as D/L schools continue to be accepted.

Pros: Very flexible program and of course, Argosy is Regionally Accredited.

Did it help you land a full time teaching job (which is my goal)?

Argosy has opened doors for me in regard to landing my first adjunct position. Currently, I am teaching for UoP & I just accepted an adjunct position at: Florida International University (FIU) in the School of Business, Graduate Studies. Just like you, my goal is to land a fulltime teaching job at a local college/university.

Was the program challenging, in particularly the dissertation process?

The program was very challenging, but manageable. The dissertation process has gone very well. I am scheduled to defend my proposal in June '05 and I hoping to defend my dissertation in August'05 (fingers crossed).

    Were you required to publish?

No, but the school does encourage it.

Are they expensive? (I get a discount since I teach for UOP).

The Sarasota Campus tuition is $600 per credit plus $30.00 technology fee is assessed for each class taken. It is to my understanding that the Atlanta Campus is more expensive than the Sarasota Campus. You may want to inquiry about this at your leisure.

Can you specialize in a field (I want to do accounting)?

Yes, Argosy offers a DBA in accounting as well.

I am considering the Atlanta campus. Still considering Nova as well so it will probably be between those two.

Both Nova & Argosy are great schools. Nova has been around longer and has a better reputation than Argosy, but also more expensive.

    Hope this help.

20% is substantial. Can you verify it please?

It's on the UOP faculty website, which you need a log-in to view. I don't think its public knowledge, since you have to teach for UOP to get the discount.

I graduated from Argosy University Orange County Campus in 2003 with a DBA in Management. I retired from the Air Force in 2004 and got a full-time teaching job at an AACSB accredited MBA program later that year. My Argosy degree has never been questioned and my DBA has been looked upon very favorably at my school. My fellow colleagues have DBAs and PhDs from some well known schools--Harvard, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Arizona State, U of Texas.

Did it help you land a full time teaching job? Yes definitely--see above.

Was the program challenging, in particularly the dissertation process? Yes--the courses were challenging---lots of journal readings, oral presentations, and research papers--lots of research papers! Argosy is very picky on APA formatting, and the proper use of quantitative and qualitative research methods.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dissertation process--simply because I was passionate about my topic. When you select a dissertation topic you must select an area that you have a passion for--otherwise you will not have the discipline and internal fortitude to complete the study. I left many colleagues at the ABD stage--they fizzled out and lost interest in their study--they didn't enjoy it anymore.

Were you required to publish? Not required to publish--but highly encouraged and mentored to publish. My dissertation committee encouraged and mentored me to copyright my research model and publish my study. Through their mentorship and encouragement I had my first book published which I co-authored with a colleague of mine.

Are they expensive? Not any more than other universities, I believe.

Can you specialize in a field? I specialized in Management since that is my focus. Not all Argosy campuses offer the same specializations for the DBA.

Bottom-line based on my experience: Once you have completed your doctorate, there is less and less focus on what degree and from which school (assuming it is an RA school), and more and more focus on what have you done since completing the degree--such as publishing in journals in your field, giving presentations at professional conferences, conducting research, and consulting in your field. The doctorate is not the sole indicator of your accomplishments or future potential, but only one of many variables that are considered, in addition to publications, presentations, research, and consulting. As the date on your diploma fades into history, the importance of whether your degree is from Argosy or a more well known school decreases, and the focus is on your current accomplishments.

    Hello Everyone!

I am a UoP faculty member, and I have taken advantage of the discounted tuition rate. The UoP's faculty members are eligible to receive a 10% discounted rate on their tuition while attending the following Universities: Argosy, Walden, Fielding, Capella & Regent.

    Thanks,

    Dr. Rene:

    Congrats!!!

It is great to see that a Argosy University graduate has done well.

    Thanks,

Dr Rene thanks for much for your input. You made me feel good about considering Argosy, and you made some excellent points. I have a rather silly question, but when you attend DL programs (including those with some residency) do you participate in a graduation ceremony and reserve an actual degree, suitable for framing?

Yes definitely. Argosy Orange County had a pretty big graduation ceremony which I attended--it filled up the large ballroom of one of the major hotels in Orange County--maybe a couple of hundred graduates, from bachelor to doctorate degrees in business, education, and psychology. Of course there is a traditional diploma, suitable for framing. I opted for the matting/frame with the Argosy seal and name embossed on it--looks good hanging in my office wall.

By the way--I don't consider Argosy a distant learning program. I was in a classroom for many evenings, and week-ends. I also took some intensive week-long courses. There were a lot of assignments due the first day of class (syllabi were email out a month in advance with assignments due the first day), and a major research paper was due approx 1 to 2 weeks after the last class session. Argosy does offer hybrid courses with a combination of in-residence sessions and on-line assignments.

    Question for Dr Rene

Or anyone else attending or having attended Argosy can answer. The way the courses are designed at Argosy, I know that you can complete 49 percent or so online. The Atlanta campus only offers the DBA in Mgmt, but the Sarasota campus offers the DBA in Accounting. Would I be able to take some courses at the Sarasota campus as well as here in Atl so that I can have the accounting concentration? It would fit in well with my plans..I have an undergrad in accounting, an MBA, I want to get my CPA as well, and I want to go on to teach accounting in academia. I contacted the director here in Atl but haven't heard from him yet. :)

    dst10spr97,

I believe you can take courses from different Argosy campuses as part of your degree program. I had colleagues at Orange County that may have completed courses at the Phoenix campus as part of their doctorate program. The on-line courses make this option most attractive.

By the way, your plans are very similar to my wife's track. She has her BBA, MBA, and CPA, and is currently completing the DBA coursework at Argosy Orange County. She has previously taught accounting and taxation at the undergrad and grad level.

Hopefully the Argosy Atlanta director will respond to your query.

    Good luck in your program.

Yes, you can take any Argosy class that you want at any campus. I've seen it done.
