I just received a hard copy of the prospectus for the University of London's new LL.M. program.

It looks pretty much like I have elsewhere described it. One additional feature is that they provide all textbooks and apparently some live guidance. Whether that amounts to tuition, I don't know.

No first degree in law is required to enrol for the Certificate. Oddly, enrolling for the LL.M. "rightout of the box" does require a background in law. I don't understand how this works.

I haven't looked but I'd guess that the prospectus is also available online at www.londonexternal.ac.uk

Is the new LLM available to those who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma but don't have a first degree in law? That was the impression I got from earlier posts on this topic.

However, http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/postgraduate/llm_05/entrance.shtml states only that holders of the Certificate are eligible for admission to the Diploma program -- not that holders of the Diploma are eligible for admission to the LLM program.

    I can't tell.

The answer might be found in the Regulations for the new program, which I have not yet seen.

In any event, I imagine that the University would evaluate each application on its own merits.

The prospectus has a note that essentially says that UoL can consider individual applications on their own merits even if they don't meet the listed admission criteria. I would imagine therefore that a successful UoL student would have a good chance of being admitted to the LLM.

I say this all the time, but the best source of clarification of your particular situation is the London External admission office.

1(a) In order to be eligible to enrol for the LLM degree an applicant must have:

    ...

    (v) obtained either the Common Professional Examination or an equivalent Diploma in Law where in either case the applicant has also obtained a Second Class Honours degree of a UK university (or an educational institute of university rank) or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard obtained after a course of study extending over not less than three years in a university (or an educational institute of university rank)

To me it seems that the diploma in law is acceptable provided that you have a BA/BS degree with a GPA of 3.0+ in ANY subject provided it takes three-years full-time to complete.
