I just received the 50% tuition discount offer for Master's MPA program and wanted to obtain information on Walden's coursework. I e-mailed Walden's admissions counselor but didn't receive a thorough explanation.

I am not sure if Walden courses progress at a group pace or if they are based on individual assignments. Also, I have read that coursework involves postings to the discussion board and a ten page or so paper. Any Walden learner's who can comment further on coursework?
    Thanks

Why did they give you 50% off your tuition??? Is it for the entire program?

Said they were offering the following:

    Dear Charles,

Walden University is currently developing a special research study to evaluate the student experience from enrollment to graduation. This study is open only to a select group of individuals interested in the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) program. As a participant in this Student Experience Evaluation Study, you will begin the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) program on March 28, 2005?and in exchange for your continued involvement, Walden University will reduce the cost of your tuition by 50% for the duration of your program.

To take advantage of this exciting opportunity, we must hear from you quickly?the application deadline is March 16, 2005, and only a limited number of students will be accepted. To expedite the process, take a few minutes to create your profile and begin the online application at https://secure.waldenu.edu/psp.

Please contact me at [email protected] or 866-492-5336, ext. 6107, for details about participating in this study. I look forward to helping you earn your degree at Walden University.

    Sincerely,

I can't afford Walden, but if you can get 50% off for the entire program, then you might want to seriously consider it. It is regionally accredited.

I agree that the reduced tuition makes this a tempting offer. However, as an addendum to the topic, unless one is planning to pursue a doctorate in Psychology the value of a masters degree in Psychology in the labor market is highly questionable!

    Simon:
The offer in my case was for an Master in Public Administration. Walden does have several concentrations one of which had my intetrest was public saftey management.

RESPONSE: You should make this decision based on a review of the listed job requirements for the position of Department Director posted by the county government office of human resources. Follow to the letter all the requirements indicated in the job description for the position and contact the dept. of human resources if you are not certain about degree requirements. Good luck!

That's a valid question. My perspective is from that of a government employee, which I am. My undergraduate work was in business management and my graduate work was in criminology with a concentration in public administration. Having said that...

A masters degree in public administration would probably increase your understanding of how municipal and county governments work, moreso than an MBA. My graduate-level courses in public administration covered such topics as how to raise revenue through various taxations -- along with other governmental functions that are vastly different from corporate viewpoints.
