I have an acquaintance that is looking for a DL doctoral program in Art or Art History. Anyone know of a legitimate US or Australian/South African/British offering of the sort? Programs that require a semester on campus will not work for this person.

Re: Re: Doctorate in Art or Art History? I'm getting a little tired of repeating this, but . . . UKC does no DL whatsoever. To the best of my knowledge the same is true of Teesside. Aber only specifically does DL in the courses listed on this page http://www.aber.ac.uk/distance/ The other thing to mention is that with a very few exceptions (the OU and Lampeter being the most notable), you should never, ever approach a UK university asking about distance learning PhDs. You should only ever inquire about part-time PhD study. Be prepared to be flexible about attendence on campus, as well. You may not be asked to do a full term, but you will be asked to do at least a week (and more usually at least two) a year. Angela
Re: Re: Re: Doctorate in Art or Art History? I've been as guilty of this mistake (citing Kent and Teeside) as anyone else. I've imagined that it came from an old DL guide. Also, I've made statements similar to Angelas regarding research-based doctoral programs but these programs continue to be discussed (by some at least) as if they are designed to be DL degree programs. They are not. Even the PhD program in Anthropology at Lampeter (which is described as a DL program) has a residency requirement. Perhaps Chip et al would consider authoring an article on research-based PhD programs (or dissertation-only PhD programs if you prefer) that highlights the fact that, with very few exceptions, these are not really DL programs and they can not be approached as if they were.
