I don't know how many LE practitioners or CJ students frequent this board but thought this post may be informative for some members.

I contacted Nova Southeastern University back in September and inquired whether or not they had plans to eventually offer a distance learning/nontraditional Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. This is the text of the e-mail response I received from them, although the individual's contact info at the end of the message has been removed:

    Mr. XXXXXXX:

Thank you for your interest in the Nova Southeastern University Criminal Justice Institute. Dr. XXXXXX forwarded me your e-mail inquiry.

As you may know, we currently offer an online Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice and are in the process of developing an online doctoral program. We are well into the process, but still have a few hurdles to overcome. At this point it is difficult to put an exact date as to when the program will be available, but I can say we "hope" to have it up and running in under a year from now.

Once the Ph.D. curriculum is approved I will announce it on our website at www.cji.nova.edu. I hope this helps. If you have further questions please do not hesitate to contact me. (End of e-mail message.)

With the recent discussion about TUI's online Business Ph.D. program that was recently accredited by WASC I thought it would be appropriate to post the e-mail response that NSU sent me last fall.

I know NSU is well-known for their nontraditional graduate degree programs and I'm curious whether or not the Ph.D. in CJ at NSU will be offered completely online or in a intensive seminar format similar to their DBA and DPA programs.

If NSU does offer a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice oriented towards nontraditional/distance learning students, I believe they will capture a growing niche of students who are currently working in the LE field and looking to continue with CJ graduate school coursework past the master's degree level. I believe Capella and possibly other distance learning schools offer a Ph.D. in Human Services with a CJ concentration but the NSU program would be the first CJ-specific distance learning doctoral program in the nation.

As a LE practitioner interested in eventually earning a doctorate degree, I am extremely excited about the NSU plans for a distance Ph.D. in CJ program.

Any comments about NSU's programs overall would be appreciated and I am especially interested in comments from NSU students or alumni regarding how a Ph.D. in CJ at NSU would be viewed by academic institutions.
