There hasn't been much discussion about this site. For various reasons, I am interested in pursuing a South African LLB, and I had gotten some information from UNISA, which was rather like pulling teeth.

EDegree appears to handle online affairs for a number of universities, including in this case, the University of the Free State. (And including one certificate from UNISA.)

My email got a very prompt response from someone who said that he would be my call center agent, and it was his job to guide me through the application process and answer my questions.

The prices seem quite reasonable (<8K for an LLB). Further, unlike UNISA, eDegree will set up private invigilation (my new favorite phrase) for people who don't live near a test center. (They only have centers in a handful of African countries and London, England, so I suppose they pretty much need to do this if they intend a wide student population.)

Does anyone have any experience with these folks? I'm early in dealing with them, but it's encouraging.

The offer the following programs (from their website):

    University of the Free State

Things that make you go hmm

Please let me know what you discover about them. My fiancee wants to be able to practice law in the Caribbean, and for her LLB is considering UNISA and Free State via eDegree just like you.

As for me, I didn't know they facilitated an MPA. Hmm....

I'll be happy to share what I find, but I would suggest that she get in touch with eDegree directly. I've only had brief contact, but so far they seem very dedicated to customer service.

Yes, I was glad to see them on Free State's website. Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology's website also mentions an alliance with them to teach degrees from UOVS, et al.

    Re: Appear "legit"

Hi Haggai - I'm not going to pretend to understand this thoroughly, but essentially, edegree is the University of the Free State. They may simply administer the programs but the degrees eminate from and are granted by UOVS (except where indicated otherwise).

I think it's pretty straightforward. eDegree provides distance learning facilities and contracts them to other organizations. I was glad to see them on the UOVS website because it was my first inkling that, as you get at, you're dealing with the UOVS-approved method of getting one of their degrees via DL.

They also contract with Pearson as the African subcontractor on the Pearson contract with Heriot-Watt's MBA program. I wonder if that means that the Heriot-Watt programs aren't available from eDegree outside Africa.

    cf., U-Pretoria

I don't know, but wonder if UVOS edegree is similar / comparable to telematics at U-Pretoria??

    ==================================

DEd is a good source of income for South Africa and helps keep them in the global loop. The South Africans (and Africans generally) have many good things to share with the global community, no matter the discipline.

My experience with South African schools has been mostly positive, though Unisa was a bureaucratic "challenge," to put it politely.

Kizmet's suggestion is excellent and Dr. Esselen responds promptly. Also, costs are laid out on the site for the various degrees.
