Hi, My name is Reed Potts and I am new to this discussion board. I am a student at East Carolina University and I am taking online classes to receive my teaching certificate. Can anyone please give me a brief description of what this Discussion Board is all about! Thanks!

Hi Reed, welcome to degreeinfo! There are a number of things that come to mind in answer to your question. The first is that this site provides an extraordinary amount of information regarding distance learning. There are a number of links on the front page that allow people to find out more about DL as well as learn more about specific schools and programs. The discussion forums frequently go into more detail regarding these programs and so reading/searching through the archives can often answer peoples questions before they've asked them. Beyonf that, there are very, very few questions that can't be answered by someone on the forum. There is also a certain substantial amount of discussion on the topic of degree mills and diploma mills. In this regard, there are a handfull of controversial topics that get discussed/debated between forum veterans, newcomers, and a collection of generally interchangable personas who adopt a variety of strategies in their efforts to promote substandard schools. There are also forums (Off-Topic and Politics) where a wider variety of subjects are discussed, just for fun. Most of the people here are very serious about education and distance learning and are able to offer suggestions, support and encouragement to others who are engaged in this endeavor. Glad to have you with us.

    Hi Reed,

Welcome. We are a community of scholars, people of wisdom and other folks interested in distance learning. Be careful, it's addicting.

    It's frighteningly addicting, isn't it?

Reed, there are folks around here with experience at all kinds of distance education programs, as well as traditional B&M programs, and programs in between. It's a great resource.

What's your program at East Carolina like?

This is an international community for people interested in higher education distance learning. There are here a good number of foreigners, such as myself. So be ready to deal with people, such as myself, who have unintelligible, broken English. :p

And, yes, I can confirm it is extremely addicting. I have been a member for more than 4 years and I still come here almost on a daily basis. I made some great friends and I found information that has helped change the direction of my life and that of some people close to me. A great community wit hgreat people. Welcome, Reed, as far as I am concerned. I hope you enjoy.

    Ditto

I venture to add my 2 cents worth...

The site is addicting and the discussions are enlightening...

I visited this site quite a bit before registering and posting.

I have found the information helpful. Almost everyone has been willing to answer my questions. However, there are some questions that might be raised by someone new to this site that will be viewed rather skeptically. This is because it is difficult to distinguish between someone asking a genuine question and someone asking a question to just to raise the blood pressure and ire of those who have been regular readers and responders and have just about seen and heard it all. They might not be as patient with us new folks as they should.

Overall, this is a good place to learn about the many different options for continuing your education. Because of the information that I have received on this site, I have applied to and am hopeful of being accepted into a doctoral program that works for my career goals and objectives, is affordable and will enhance my skills.
