    Hello Everyone!

I'm new to the forum. Just turned 52, am successful in sales management and plan to go for my MBA. I graduated with a B.S. in Law Enforcement from George Mason University 20 years ago. Their MBA program is too demanding for my current situation. They want a year of Calculus + GMAT scores. I don't have time for either. I checked into Marymount University, Regent University and Liberty University. Marymount might consider waiving the GMAT because of my undergrad GPA and years of management experience. They do insist on an essay. Regent University might also waive the GMAT. Marymount wants $562 per credit hour. Regent wants $615 per credit hour. Liberty wants $330 per credit hour and is regionally accredited (AACSB is nice, but I don't need it). Liberty does not require a GMAT.

I am leaning toward Liberty University and would appreciate any fresh input from the forum community. I am specifically looking for:

    1. Candid feedback on Liberty MBA experiences or knowledge.

    2. What level of math do I need for Liberty. (I took pre-calculus over 20 years ago). Should I take Algebra I, II and Geometry at the local community college or can I teach/update myself through books and online course(s). What math preparation, if any, is necessary for the Liberty MBA program?

    3. If I want to teach college one day, will my Liberty online MBA degree be accepted (I don't mean Ivy League)?

I want a good MBA that will offset my cop degree and generate respect in the business world. I have purchased Dr. Bear's books.

    Thanks All!:)

    Hi Johnny,

I am currently enrolled in Liberty's MBA. I will be resuming my classes in May. I've taken a little break in conjunction with my transition to civilian life.

    Liberty's MBA curriculum is here:

    http://forums.degreeinfo.com/newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&threadid=18340

I will post more this evening. In the mean time, you may want to utilize the search feature to read previous discussions about Liberty's MBA.

A GOOGLE search, such as "MBA + Liberty University" will show that some university faculties include Liberty MBAs.

Undoubtedly, some people here and elsewhere will be hostile to a choice of Liberty University because they do not agree with its worldview.

    Johnny,

while waiting on Charles to post more info you might want to go to:

    www.geteducated.com

and download the free guide to business programs. There are many programs that either do not have a GMAT requirement or will waive based upon different criteria.

I don't have any first hand experience with Liberty but do have a friend who completed multiple degrees from them and is happy with the results.

    Regards,

    Kevin

  4. Liberty "worldview"...

I'm one of those who do not much care for Liberty's "worldview", as Charles put it in his reply. My issues with Liberty's worldview have more to do with the worldview of its founder and mentor, Jerry Falwell, than they do with what actually goes on at the institution or the views/teaching styles of its faculty. Hard for me to separate Falwell's obviously racist and homophobic statements with the educational mission of his institution.

That all being said, I have done a bit of research on their MBA program and would recommend it. I would recommend it maybe because of their "worldview", which includes positive things as well as the evilness I pointed out in the first paragraph.

In other words, the good part of Liberty University is that they are turning out MBA grads with ethics, values, and compassion, unlike most of the other business schools in the country who are teaching their students to sell out the American worker to the lowest bidder/outsourcer all in the name of short term profit and at the expense of long-term strategic viability of our economy.

So, if you care something about your fellow human beings/the Ameican worker, AND you want to be a businessman with an MBA, Liberty is definitely a solid choice.

    Liberty University MBA Comments

Thanks Charles and Fed. I have already done an extensive amount of research including what you suggest. Nothing addresses the math requirement question. I'm looking for fresh, recent input, as I'm down to the wire in making a final decision. I am not afraid of math, and I can update myself quickly. I just don't have time to take a year of calculus plus 3 years (part-time) of calculus pre-requesites. Liberty says their MBA program requires no prerequisites; however, when I called them I was told by one individual that some calculus (I believe a very small amount) is used in one of their MBA courses. I just want to get a handle on how I should go about preparing for the math. I don't want to invest study time (math) if/where it will not be needed, nor do I want to overlook what will be needed. It appears that Liberty does not place heavy emphasis on math; however, I want to hear from the forum community before I make my final decision.

As far as the "world view" comment, this will not be an issue with me, since I embrace Christianity. My world view is based upon my life experiences and study of the bible. I have practiced martial arts with an ambassador of Liberty, and I can honestly state I was impressed with the intelligence and sincerity of this individual. We all must choose our own path. Thanks for the warning anyway .

I look forward to any new comments.;)

    Liberty University MBA

    Thanks Carl!:)

I respect your opinions. I am probably more familiar with Liberty's world view than most people here. My goal is not to attack Christians, Muslims, Mormons or any other group. We could have at least a million debate posts. I am informed.

My desire is to hear evaluations about experiences with Liberty and the level of math preparation required to get a 4.0 GPA (my goal). :)

Thanks for your encouraging words on the quality of the program at Liberty, and thanks for taking time to respond.

    Johnny,

You are correct, in my experience, eight courses, Liberty's MBA program does not place heavy emphasis on math.

I have found each course a challenge. I was apprehensive when we went to an online program. However, I have found the courses no less challenging. The online environment has created much more interaction with the professors and fellow students.

I do not believe you will have trouble with the math at Liberty. Without some background in calculus and statistics, you may struggle a bit with Economics but even without you should still be able to get by. I would not go to the trouble of taking math courses at a local college but would instead purchase The Fast Forward MBA in Business Math by Peter Garrity and a good financial calculator.

    Re: Liberty University MBA Comments

Johnny, you can probably teach yourself the small amount of calculus required for that one course in the MBA degree programme. I suspect the calculus needed might have to do with rates of change (derivatives) and potentially introductory integrals. From the MBA courses I have seen you canb pick up the calculus materials quite easily with a good college introductory textbook. I personally recommend any first-year calculus textbook by Howard Anton - Howard Anton’s Calculus (John Wylie and Sons, Inc., 2002).

Good luck with your studies at whichever school you eventually decide to enroll.

    Liberty MBA - Math Comments

My heartfelt thanks to Charles, Fed, Carl, rtongue and horne for your input and guidance. Your advice and counsel is appreciated.

I took the plunge today and sent off my application to Liberty for the Fall semester. I plan to use the time between now and then to get strong in math and statistics.

If Liberty accepts my application, this will be my first experience with a distance learning degree.

I feel very welcome in the forum and I'll do my best to appropriately contribute in the future as time and circumstance dictate.

You all are a great group! :)
