    Questions about promoters:

    What steps do you take to locate a U.S. promoter/supervisor for an overseas DL program?

    Do you select a university prof in your field and ask him or her to assist you?

    Once selected, do you send the promoter's resume to the school for approval?

    Do you offer payment for the service? If so, do you arrange to pay them out of your own pockets or do you ask your school to do it?

    Lastly, how much should they expect to be paid?

    Thanks.

    He means a dissertation director.

    (Roscoe, whatever happened to that guy at UDW?)

    Good question, Janko.

    For some reason, he stopped answering emails, just as I was knee-deep into my research. He just disappeared.

    After that episode, I started corresponding with Prof. Song, then he vanished (or rather, moved to another school, I think).

    I sure thought I had everything in place and was making progress. Although, I will admit, I was initially frustrated over the time it took to get the enrollment papers, etc. (I'd been trying since 2002).

    I had hoped that by this time (2005) I would be rejoicing right along with Bill Grover.

    At the moment I'm communicating with another faculty member at UniZulu. My questions about "the guy" have gone unanswered. Even Song refused to address the issue.

    I'm also looking into other SA schools that don't require visits.

    {Explanation of this slightly arcane stuff: Roscoe and I both had contact with a lecturer at a South African university and considered doing a DL doctorate under the guy's supervision. I got political willies and dumped the idea, and felt bad about it for quite a while. Maybe I shouldn't have.}

    Ag shame, Roscoe, sorry to hear that. My one consistent gripe with SA schools is the lack of communication in a timely way, and inability to keep contact with people (where do they go?). E-mails go unanswered and even when you get somebody on the phone, getting a direct answer is often just not going to happen. It's sort of Schlamperei gone bosbefok, not to mix metaphors.

    Would you PM me with the name of the vanishing prof? I lost all my e-mails from that period and it's bugging me trying to remember the chap's name. God knows I don't want to contact him; it's just a brain fart. I also have another private question for you. Thanks.
