Question About the Design of Assignments

In my courses in Computer Science I have noticed a difference in how homework sets are designed and I have definitely developed a preference for one style over others. Consider the following two styles:

    Style 1:
Homework consists of a small set of problems that are quite difficult. However, the instructor/grader gives credit for partial solutions or effort.

    Style 2:
Homework consists of a much larger set of problems than style 1; however these problems vary in difficulty from easy to quite difficult. In addition, very little credit is given for partial solutions.

As a student I much prefer style 2 over style 1. For one thing it gives me a chance to demonstrate at least some knowledge of the material by completing the easier problems as well as helping me build confidence if working with an unfamiliar topic. Also, my individual stress level is reduced because I have to worry less about the subjective evaluation of partial solutions or "effort". The biggest downside to style 2 (from a student's perspective only) is that there is a lot more work to do to prepare/complete the homework if you are quick enough to know how to do the hard problems from the onset.

Like I said, I prefer style 2. Does anyone prefer style 1?

I prefer the assignments of Style 1 when I was going through the computer courses. In the courses I am currently studying, not computer related at all, I still prefer Style 1 as it allows me to focus on the core skills while reducing the amount of "make work" type assignment exercises.
