Glancing at their new 2001-2002 directory.

20 years ago, they accredited only one degree-granting institution, along with scores of truck driving,* meatcutting, art, etc. schools. Now it is 38 degree-granting, and 39 non-degree. I think I see a trend.

Of the 38 ten have had some courses reviewed and recommended for credit by the American Council on Education-- which considerably , I think, improves their chances of acceptance.

American College of Computer and Information Sciences, Columbia Southern, Andrew Jackson, and California National are not among them.

*I give up. How do you teach truck driving by distance learning? Perhaps www.truckschool.com would tell us.

Maybe they have VR training software that streams over the net. [IMG]

It ain't easy, John. But here in the South, most of our truck drivers learn via this method. Uncle Clem just tells young Bubba how to start the ole rig up, and off the boy goes.

Just curious, is this this truck driving school Steve Levicoff's alma mater? [IMG]

I don't think so, Russell, but he *does* report that he learned to drive a truck via non-traditional means. If memory serves, he apprenticed with somebody.

    Arm's length ?

  6. Answer: Only partly. According to the outline of courses, the programs are designed in a Home Study Phase and a Resident Training Phase. Home study lessons include topics such as principles of diesel engines, the log book, trip planning, etc. Makes sense to me -- prospective drivers can get the technical info and learn about rules & regs at their own pace and then concentrate on the actual operation of tractor trailers.

It is a little unsettling to see a big rig with a "Student Driver" sign on it (not uncommon south of Cedar Rapids, where Kirkwood Community College offers truck driving classes.)

From their website: The advantages of the Home Study Phase are many... but to mention a few... the course is yours to keep when you complete it and it will serve as an invaluable reference long after you have forgotten what was taught in the traditional classroom environment.

Dang. I have forgotten whether that shiny bright red light means 'stop' or 'go' or 'Mabel's' or what. Gotta remember to check my home study course when I get back to the double-wide.
