In response to Canadian Universities being more willing to accept Brit. or Austrl. degrees then a private instituition in the States is not totally accurate. I know of several schools that will not even look at a British based PHD due the lack of course work. To further the equation - Saint Mary's University - no leader in distance education by any stretch of the imagination is now offering a part time PhD in Business were students do some course work at SMU in the summer and do the rest online. This school will no longer accept Research only degrees so I cannot see them hypoctitically rejecting a similiar program from the US..... Although one never knows...
Personally I feel that a tend is going to emerge in the next decade were the acceptance of distance PhD's grows substantially. I also see more non distance universties (St. Mary's for one) starting to offer a program - b/c there is a huge market for the degree and schools usually won't miss the market for long - sorry about the gramm. but I am in a rush!
Look it to the major canadian universities; McGill, U of Toronto, Waterloo and Queens is full of people with UK degrees, at the PhD level is more important the research than the courses. For the other hand I don't think someone living in Canada and earning canadian bucks can afford a US institution, I couldn't, that why is not even in my short list.
This is very good news!! I know that Athabasca is planning a PhD for the near future, it was about time. So, I would probably wait and do my PhD in Sant Mary's, it would have more acceptance than any other option in Canada (Australia, UK, US) Regards
I am not too sure that the "near future" thing about AU is quite on line with what I have led to believe will be the case. I know that the Centre for Innovative Management at AU has discussed such an endeavour, but it really hasn't been brought forward that much. CIM is quite responsive to market demands, so I would expect that a DBA or PhD in Business should be available within the next couple of years. Darren.
dlkereluk writea "I am not too sure that the "near future" thing about AU is quite on line with what I have led to believe will be the case." When I was at Athabasca 3 or 4 years ago, the subject of a distance doctorate arose. President Abrioux suggested that it had been the wish and plan of one faculty member, who was no longer with them. My sense, not confirmed, was that the "wish and plan" and the "no longer with" may have been connected.
I would not say that it would never happen but I find it hard to imagine a Canadian DL Ph.D. I think our schools are somewhat more conservative and that the academic community would not be very supportive. North
With the exchange rate it would be fairly prohibitive. I think Sarasota was the most affordable at 20,000 ++ US$. One of the things I did not like with them was the Ed.D. designation for their degrees. I would prefer the Ph.D./Th.D. as it is an academic doctoral designation as opposed to professional (Ed.D. D.Min. etc). In my opinion one of the most over priced is the UofP DM (Doctor of Managmement). You are paying HUGE $$$ for a DM designation. As well I was not impressed with the course titles and descriptions. North
Let me add that I am not saying anything about the quality of the degree for I know nothing about it. I just think it is somewhat over priced and had (at least initially rather funny sounding courses and descriptions). Certainly a professional doctorate as opposed to academic. At that price I think a lot more people would consider foreign degrees if they really bothered to research the issue. Some foreign institutions do very well for quality and cost. I could also see where some people might perceive a foreign degree in better light than a UofP degree based on the nature of the schools as nontraditional and rather an educational chain. Although, I suppose it is easier to deal with something closer to home. On the other hand, so far I have had no problem (extremely smooth) with my dealings with a foreign entity. North
Ah, John, Dominique says a lot of interesting things. I know that we had some discussions in Academic Council about the DBA/PhD in business idea, but like I said, it was 2 or 3 years down the pipes. Darren.
