You don't run across this every day --

Michigan State University (Dr. Bear's alma mater) is offering an online M.S. and Ph.D. program in beam physics (that is particle beam for you non-atom smashers out there). A color brochure on the program can be downloaded (if you are connected via 56K modem this 9 MB file will take some time to load). The Ph.D. involves passing a graduate exam in 4 core areas, taking 3 beam physics courses, and doing the dissertation. 9 credits can be transferred from other programs into the M.S. Certificate studies are also available. This is a joint effort with the MSU National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, MSU's Virtual University, and the U.S. Dept. of Energy.

You can check out the MSU Virtual University, including other MSU online programs at http://vu.msu.edu

You can obtain additional information at:
    http://vubeam.nscl.msu.edu/

    I found this info at
    http://www.worldwidelearn.com/online-degrees.htm

Of interest here is Hamilton College http://www.hamiltonia.edu/hconline/index.htm an accredited institution that offers Associate degrees online. I guess we must be careful in this forum to not confuse it with the unaccredited mill of Hamilton University seen in USA Today.

    John,

On a completely unrelated note, how close is UWS Nepean to announcing their Doctor of Astronomy? Also, how goes the radio astronomy project?

    Thanks,
    Mark A. Sykes

Yeah, I've been checking the UWS web site every day (sometimes more) to see if they've posted anything.

Also, I looked into the MSU Beam Physics program a couple years ago. It's so narrow in scope that I decided not to pursue - if there was an optical physics or photonics specicialization then I'd be in.

    No new news....

I did ask about the UWS internet astronomy doctorate. Apparently UWS is undergoing a restructuring and as the result the internet doctorate program has been put on the backburner for awhile. Many UWS AIM students are also wondering when it will formally be announced.

    Keeping our fingers crossed,

    John
