    Hi Renshi:

Was the DSST DRUG and Alcohol exam easy? Did you need to study at all or can you just use common sense?

    Thanks,

    Abner

I used the Foundations of Gerontology and Psychology of Adulthood & Aging as part of my upper level req's. There is a fair bit of overlap between the two exams, and (for me at least) a good amount of common knowledge-y type stuff.

I studied for both at the same time, and got an A on each.

By way of comparison, I also took DSST Civil War & DSST Soviet Union. They were both difficult (for me). I studied alot, with not great results (though I did pass). I also took Drug&Alcohol (A), and reviewed more than for the above ECE exams.

Just making sure they accepted both exams as they are both similar?

    Thanks

Was there any credit overlap between the two exams? and which school are you enrolled in?

    Keep me posted

    Hi Renshi!

Do me a favor and let me know what you got on the Drug and Alcohol test. If the score is not good and you don't want to post it for everyone to see, can you private message me? I would appreciate it.

Gotta go take my Spanish CLEP todat at 9am, wish me luck!!

    :) Abner

I am sure you did fine on the Drug and Alchohol test,

I have no experience with CLEP or Excelsior exams. If I take the exam and pass, do I receive a regular college transcript that indicates I took the class? How does this work?

Not really; you get a grade report that shows you took the test and what score you got.

CLEP keeps transcripts of your results and some of us have CLEP transcripts that look like entire program lists.

Different colleges and universities have varying policies on which tests they accept for credit and at what score. Some won"t accept any, some like Excelsior are very generous.

Now, if a college you attend accepts your test and the score, then they will put it on your transcript and it will appear there as credit for the equivalent course. Even then, it most often doesn't look like you took the class -- simply that you've been given credit for that class.

This is very different than waiving a class (something I now wish I hadn't done). When a department waives a class it means you don't have to take it. But, you don't get credit and a grade either. That means you have to put some other class in the space it was filling.

An example: I made a deal that went something like this -- "If I take music theory IV and pass, I don't have to take music theory I, II, and III". I did pass theory IV and so didn't have to take the 9 hours of I, II, and III. But I also didn't get those 9 hours of credit and was then required to fill those nine hours with something else - inevitably, "something else" was a harder/more advanced class.

My opinion is that testing out of a class for credit is always better than simply waiving or substituting one...

The 2 Upper Level Excelsior exams I took were World Population and Abnormal Psych. Abnormal Psych was somewhat easy but I already have a background in it. World Population is known to be the easiest. www.bain4weeks.com has more info on these exams. The only thing is many describe World Population as a no-study exam. I would NOT go that far esp with about $190 involved. I already took many Soc and Geography courses before but never the less I got an A with only 1 afternoon of study. I studied the CIA world factbook online (free).

Drug and Alcohol Abuse is kinda easy, but at least know the BASIC pharmocology of the drugs. Some member here made a website with a great outline of the exam abridged on 2 pages but I didn't remember her name on here.

At least study the drug abuse section of a basic family medical guide.
