Does DETC fall under guidelines for a school that wants REGIONAL Accreditation?

    Thanks

    "That wants regional accreditation"? "Guidelines"?

    I don't understand your question.

DETC is not a regional accreditor. DETC accreditation generally won't suffice in situations that specify regional accreditation.

If you are talking about graduate school admissions or about transferring undergraduate credit to a different school, then no. DETC degrees and credits won't be accepted as being regionally accredited degrees and credits. But some RA schools do have special admissions policies and may be willing to accept the DETC work.

That's a case-by-case deal and depends on the school and on the situation.

Possession of DETC accreditation doesn't really imply much of anything about whether or not the DETC school wants regional accreditation.

In a couple of cases (Western Governors University and American Military University), schools with DETC accreditation went on to regional accrediation (WGU) or RA candidacy (AMU). (Candidacy is a stepping stone to full accreditation.)

But I'd say that in most cases possession of DETC accreditation suggests that a school thought that regional accreditation was out of reach or inappropriate for some reason, and implies that they won't be seeking RA in the near future.

    That's probably a case-by-case deal too.

  4. BillDayson, Aren't We Narrow Minded?

    Dear Mr. Dayson,

Aren't we narrow minded regarding DETC accreditation. I guess you are a part of, "The RA or noway philosophy". Typical of the responses I see here. I am just glad that education is becoming more progressive, and people with opinions such as yourself are behind the times.

    Sincerely,

What's wrong with Dayson's response? Looks to me like it's right on. You seem a little hyper-sensitive to me. I see nothing in his response that is offensive or demeaning to DETC accreditation.

Re: BillDayson, Aren't We Narrow Minded?

But is anything Bill said false? Of course not. The desire for things to be different is fine, but it isn't a substitute for reality.

The fact is, there are many situations where a degree from a DETC-accredited school will not be acceptable. This has been documented thoroughly. (There are also many situations where a DETC-accredited degree will suffice, of course.) There is never a situation where a DETC-accredited degree is acceptable, but an RA-accredited degree is not.

Until those class differences are resolved, the chasm between these two forms of recognition will exist. Shooting the messenger doesn't help, nor does mis-characterizing him ("RA-or-no-way").

(Bill has posted more supportive information about certain unaccredited schools than everyone else on this board combined. Just another "fact" the poster ignored.)

Perhaps this will change in the future.
