Disclaimer: I apologize if a topic of this nature has been posted before.

I'm considering UNISA for my post-masters work. (I'd love to go to Nova Southeastern, but I'm working with budget constraints here too.)

I've been to their web-site. It's overwhelming with the amount of information that's there.

    My questions are these:
    - Has anyone here (in this forum) enrolled in a doctoral program at UNISA? (I would like to pursue a Ph.D. in Education ... but I have the qualifications (if not the desire) to pursue a degree in Information Systems as well.)
    - What was the procedure that you had to follow to:
    - Apply
    - Get approved
    - Enroll
    - What was the length of time that this all took?
    - What was your costs associated with this process?

    Thank you!

It is apparently helpful to go through one of the services through which UNISA has an agreement. From what has been posted here the one in the US (AIHEC) is not helpful. The guy seems to be trying to run it as a side business and people have reported trouble getting him to respond. I think a couple of people reported more luck getting the Canadian service to respond and let you know which doctorates had residency, etc. I do not remember the address but if you go to Yahoo and type:
    "University of South Africa" (Canada)
    the address comes up.

    Good luck!

I wonder what happened to John Craparo (AIHEC director). He used to visit AED. He answered questions from prospective UNISA students.

John Craparo is an extremely nice guy, and I have no idea what happened to AIHEC. The last time I called the number I had for it, an operator told me it had been disconnected. I suppose my advice now has to be to contact UNISA directly, as they do respond promptly to e-mails.

    Peace,

    Thanks.

I sent them an e-mail earlier today. Now I sit here and await a response.

I tried to call AIHEC (USA) but the phone kept ringing and ringing with no answer.

I hope this canadian agent gets back to me.

    Thanks again.

Just for grins, I went to their website (the Canadian one, not AIHEC) this afternoon and filled out a request form for information about the DBL programme. They got back to me in less than 3 hours with basic information, two attachments describing the programme, and an invitation to call or write with questions. The responder was one Dr. Michael Esselen and the url is:
    http://www.iaci-canada.com/Information

    Very nice.

    Rich,

I got the same response from them. I'm at Tech-Ed tomorrow and class again tomorrow night. So ... once I get a chance to sit down I will review this information and get back to them.

This seems like a good outfit.

Thanks to all of you for shoving me in this direction.

(Could this be another key moment in my life?) :)

Have just recently been through the first part of the UNISA process for DEd. Some frustrations, misunderstandings regarding dates etc. but otherwise very approachable.

Process: request Grad.Info.Pkg. Complete both application AND registration forms, must include letter from last institution attended indicating you would qualify for admission there to a Doctorate program. Must send both application/admission fee and registration fee, plus "student association fee" with forms. If Faculty of Ed. considers your academic record acceptable, you must then sumbit a research proposal (note you still have not been formally admitted to register). If proposal approved, then you will be registered.

At time of application fee was 7030 Rand (approx. $1,400 Can.).

    Joan,

Thanks. That was quite helpful. How far did you go through the process? (Did you submit your proposal for research?)

I too would like to earn the DEd., but the one thing I worry about is that all of my work thus far (BS & Masters) have been in Information Technology. (Well, except for a minor in Asian Studies.) So I'm thinking I may be better off heading toward a CS or IT based doctorate.

From the sounds of things it seems that I should probably wait until I'm totally complete with my Masters to continue this thing further. (I have about 8 months left.)

    Thanks again,
    Ellis
