I saw in another thread about someone suggesting Nations U. for religious studies. I cannot find Nations U.'s degree granting authority anywhere, either on Louisiana's higher education page, google searches, or through a forum search here. I understand that the school is unaccredited, but seems to be respected by the "heavy hitters" on this board. I'm very interested in possibly seeking a Master's degree from this university, but would like to know:

--Where does Nations University get it's degree-granting authority?

--Will they possibly seek accreditation sometime in the near future?

--Are the studies welcoming to other faiths other than the Church of Christ (Catholics, Orthodox, etc.)?

--Are there any other accredited theological schools in the US accepting Nations' degrees for further studies?

    -any "hidden" costs?

Thank you ahead of time for your help with this. i hope someone out there can answer these questions.

Yes, thank you, I have read that page. I was wondering if there were any OTHER accredited schools than the one listed. It also still doesn't answer WHERE their degree-granting authority comes from. Doesn't the school have to at least be approved by the state, which in this case would be Louisiana?

Responding to the call, the school was incorporated in Louisiana in 1996 as NationsUniversity with a board of three people--Ady, Lynn, and Darrell Frazier. The institution was subsequently approved by the Board of Regents of Louisiana to grant degrees. The name has been registered with the U.S. Government and with the Egyptian Government. The institution has been granted tax exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 organization.

The information above is taken from the Nations University website listed below.

In personal email correspondence, Mac Lynn has told me that they accept anyone into their studies. It doesn't matter if they are Christians or non-Christians, much less of differing Christian denominations.

They address the accreditation issue on their website. Basically Nations University boils down to this - are you able to go to Lipscomb in the future to continue with graduate school? If so, then you have options later.

If not, (or if you are simply intending to get the Masters now as you mention) then it depends upon what you want the degree to accomplish. It will not get you on staff at a Christian seminary or college. You may well learn quite a lot, so if knowledge is what you are after, then the price is right.

To know whether or not it is a good choice depends greatly upon what you plan to use the degree for.

Thank you for the responses. Somehow I missed the information from NationsUniversity history page. I was hoping to complete studies and obtaining a Masters degree for eventual further graduate studies at Catholic University. My eventual goal is ordination in the Catholic Church. I figured a graduate degree for [mostly] free was not a bad deal, and Nations seems to be respected. I guess I will have to call Catholic U. to see if they would accept the graduate studies from this university.

Thanks again, all, for your help.

    Well, that's interesting...

I just found the Nations University site myself. I signed up for it and am just now starting the first class: Hebrew Scriptures. For a free online program, I haven't seen anything quite as good as this one. It's reasonably thorough and you won't go wrong.

I, unfortunately, cannot do a degree through the university in the UK that I would like to (Open Theological College), so this will keep me busy for a while.
