Checking to see if the Greenwich (Norfolk) site was up (it isn't), I came upon Greenwich University in Pakistan, whose site (www.greenwichuniversity.com) has some odd bits. Do we know about this one? Didn't find it in a search of this forum. Founded in 1998 (thus, presumably, few or no graduates), but self-proclaimed "recognised internationally for its academic excellence." And then there is the still-mysterious (to me) Greenwich University on White Bear Ave. (no relation) in St. Paul, Minnesota (www.greenwichuniversity.edu), another non-accessible site.
That White Bear Avenue address sounded interesting, so I checked my past searches at http://whois.userland.com/ (a great resource) GREENWICHUNIVERSITY.EDU was registered 17-Aug-1998 to Greenwich University, 4050 White Bear Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55110; administrative and billing contact is Sonibare, Nasr, [email protected] And OXBRIDGEUNIV.EDU was registered 12-Aug-1999 to Oxbridge University, 4050 White Bear Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55110; administrative and billing contact is Zone Administration Role Account, [email protected], Orbis Internet Services, Inc. (methinks the domain name got registered by the web host) I couldn't get to greenwich.edu today, but the Norfolk Island Greenwich University website is still available at http://www.greenwich.edu.nf/ -- and still claiming to be "an autonomous accredited university. It is established on Norfolk Island under its own Act of Parliament, the Greenwich University Act 1998." ------------------ Kristin Evenson Hirst DistanceLearn.About.com
John, Wasn't it Greenwich Village in the late 60's which became a haven for hippies, acid-heads, etc.? Could it be that all these different Greenwich's (except of course for the one on the island) are the by-products of bad acid trips? Hallucinogens can do strange things to the mind, you know! Russell
I think if it were people from Greenwich Village, they'd know how to pronounce it. During my time with Greenwich U/Hawaii (1990-91), I'd say that at least 75% of inquirers pronounced it "GREEN-witch" -- just as the majority of Heriot-Watt inquirers referred to the campus in ED-in-BURG. (Typical phone conversation: "ctually it's ED-un-BURR-oh' -- you know, like the Duke of Edinburgh." "Yeah, that's what I said. Ed-in-burg.")
Bad trips on acid can make one see little green witches alright! "GREN-ich" Village flower children could easily have believed they were in higher education providing quality academic credentials. I heard of one "Dead Head" who had three earned Ph.D.'s from Harvard---of so he said while in a state of acid-mania. Russell
