I'm interested to hear at what age people went back to school and for what reason along with the type of job you currently have now.

I went back to school for my BS after two AS degrees at 43 years old. 5 classes from my BS that corporate America is saying I need in spite of 23 years of experience, but I know this will pay off in the long run. I hold a management job in a F500 company.

I'm assuming I am not alone. Thanks is advance for any feedback.

I initially went back to school at age 38 and obtained my BS at 40. I am 1/2 way through an MBA at 43.

Still a Staff level engineer with no desire to have direct reports (other than project management). At least I can read and understand a financial statement and prepare a useable budget.

Mr. Engineer, you’ve got an eye for quality of life. I thought having reports was the definition of success, but now wish every day I had stayed on the technical side of things.

    direct reports........

responses to my initial thread might take on a life of thier own.

I have 30 direct reports. The BS when complete this year will be nothing more than another few papers in my file at my current job. If they ( Corp. America ) decide that I'm at that age and at that salary I'm sure they can find a reason to cut my job. I've seen it too many times done to others. That's where the degree will help finding something else.

Also, I have internal credentials up the ying yang. Six Sigma Black Belt. PMI / PMP Certification, 80 to 200 hours a year of corporate training including being a general manager to name a few.

Do you think the day of someone like me and others making it to this point without at least a four year degree has come to an end?...I'm going to continue towards my Masters but I really don't know if I have the energy to complete it in a timely manner.

I'm the director of IT for a family-owned credit reporting and collections company. I've got 3 direct reports, and I decided to go back to school at 25. I stumbled through a campus-based semester, then transferred to the University of Wyoming's BSBA Online Degree Completion program. I graduated in December, just 10 days before I turned 29. I'd tell you I went back to school to boost my earnings potential or advance my career, but originally, I went back because I was jealous of my wife-to-be (and now wife) when she hung her BA diploma on our apartment wall. Before that, I didn't really worry about going back to school all that much. That's a really flimsy (and petty) reason to want to go back to school, but in my case, it was all I needed.

After working as a community service/crime prevention office for a large sheriff's department and taking a few classess here and there, I became a full-time student at 26, completed my associates at 28, my bachelors at 29 my masters at 30 and my doctorate at 44. I have been in the field of instructional technology since 1987 and currently work full-time as an administrator (Coordinator of Learning Technologies) for a state university. I also develop and teach online graduate courses for a private regionally accredited university.

Degreeinfo has been a source of both entertainment and cutting-edge information for my professional use.

    I was 26, 32, 42 and 60.
I just today received my score for the last test I needed to finish my BS at COSC. It just took me 44 years.
The stock market has changed my status. I was retired but now I am just unemployed:D

Let's see.......I went on an academic hiatus from Ohio State University (due to a back injury) in 2000...which put me at "26".

In 2002/2003, I enrolled into Excelsior College to finish my B.S. (which I was ~28), which I completed in 2004 before my 30th b-day.

I directly enrolled into Excelsior's MLS graduate program at 30...and should finish well before I am 32 years old.

Currently, I am a high school science teacher, teaching Earth/Space/Physical Sciences...and loving it!
(Before all this, I was an asst. manager in retail:( )

I was 24 when I went back to school, 6 years after a less-than-stellar experience with a traditional B&M university.

Picked up a few credits when I was 30. I haven't enrolled yet, but I'm going to TESC at the age of 40 to pursue my BA in Journalism. I am currently working as a reporter.

Earned BS at age 52, MS at 57 and another MS at 61.
Reason; Personal enrichment plus downturn (that never happened to me) in aerospace. Turns out my degrees help me sell my services as a consultant.
Lesson learned: You never know what your future job might be, so acquire a degree that might be of use in several occupations.

started college right out of HS, but took an extended Army break...finished my BA at 25. Attended a denominational school (non-degree granting) from 26-28 and started back for my first Masters at 33, and without finishing it (but still working on it) I started another Masters at 35.

I feel like the "baby" of this forum .... :)

Started college after high school. Went to Europe during summer vacation after Sophmore year. Ended up staying in Europe. Preferred travelling to school. :) At 23, working as an IT Systems Engineer, I decided to "finally" finish my degree (although I see that my break was actually much shorter than others on this forum :) ) I did my first CLEPS and now I'm 24 and trying to arrange classes to fulfill the CIS requirements from Excelsior. Still loving life in Europe.
