I have posted twice to this board before, and both times really appreciated the replies.

I want to obtain a DBA/Ph.D. so that some time in about 5-8 years can get into college teaching at a teaching college. I have a lot of business experience, and have just begun to teach as an adjunct at a small local college.

I have been accepted to Nova, and I started a few courses at Argosy. I don't wish to offend anyone, but I personally just was not satisfied with the courses I took, so I exited the program.

I would go to Nova if I could, but 2 weekends away a month and about 12 days per year on campus just does not work for me. I have applied to the UMUC-DM program and would also consider TUI.

I would just like to ask for some feedback/advice on these 2 progarms. Certainly I think that UMUC has more name recognition, but their DM degree is not as well known. I have spoken to them and they will assist me in getting published or presenting at a conference. I have asked that of TUI, but the person who answered my email said there is no support for these endeavors. However, I suspect she answers all inquiries, so I have asked to speak with a professor.

My bottom line is to get the most for my buck from a program that will allow me to get a good education and migrate to college teaching. Certainly, TUI costs less, but I just feel that since UMUC has a better know name, and some in person meetings, this would be the best choice. Does anyone agree or disagree?

    Thanks much!

I would place more emphasis on the school and the things you do to earn the degree over the actual title of the degree. However, the reason UMUC's degree is the DM is that it is substantially different than the Ph.D. (or traditionally designed DBA's).

People on this board might be able to warn you about something, or sometimes let you know not to worry. But it is still very important for you to check your own goals and aspirations and ask whether or not the degree you seek will meet them.

Between a Ph.D. from TUI and a DM from UMUC, I'd take UMUC's DM. But the degrees are very different, and a DM might not meet your specific needs.

I'm also concerned about TUI's bid for accreditation from WASC. (Why they don't move to Arizona and the NCA is a mystery to me, given NCA's accreditation of Northcentral U.)

UMUC, which is not the same as the University of Maryland (just as UC San Diego ain't UC Berkeley), has a B&M flavor to it, which would preponderate in its favor. If the degrees themselves were similar, and if either would fit your learning, scheduling, and finances, then I'd go for the UMUC degree. But a DM isn't a Ph.D., and that might cause you some difficulties down the road. (Not that a Ph.D. from TUI is going to be universally acceptable, either.)

    Whew! ;)
