I'm interested in taking the Excelsior English Composition Exam and would like to know if there are any people here who've taken it.

Could you share your experiences? How hard is it? Any advice for a person about to take it?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Your example was why I ended up taking the TECEP English Comp I exam instead. It was expensive (their 3-credit version costs more than the 6-credit ECE) but it was extremely easy, and Excelsior gives a "Pass" grade.

They (Excelsior) are now giving letter grades for the exam, or they were as of August of last year.

For the TECEP English Comp I exam? My transcript shows P as the grade.

Excelsior gives letter grades for the ECE, but I misread your post and thought you were saying that Excelsior gave a pass for the ECE.

    Thanks for the replies.

Analyze literature instead of argumentive essays...? Sounds like it's a bit more like Literature than just "English Composition"....

What was the scope of the exam? How many essay questions? Do they expect all the notes of prewriting an essay as well or just the finished form?

By the way, you mentioned something about a board on Excelsior... I haven't been able to find one--where is it?

As I recall, there were 2 essays, I used either 10 or 20 pages for each (I can't recall exactly, but I used the entire book on both): handwritten in the obligatory blue books that many schools use.

There was also a section of pre-writing for the second essay that had to be turned in, for a total of three sections of the exam.

The boards are only available to students of Excelsior. I think I can still log in there. If you are a student, PM me and I'll see if I can find my login and I'll point you to the boards. If not, try googling for: "English Comp" site:excelsior.edu or just google for the ECE and excelsior. I think I found something about the exam that way. . .

    TECP English Comp I exam

    Hi!

Is the TECEP English Comp I exam and Excelsior exam? Please advise ASAP, believe me I am interested in any exams anyone can recommend that are easy.

If anyone else knows of any "easy" exams please advise.

    Thanks, Abner :)

The TECEP English Comp I exam is easy if you know basic sentence structure. You're allowed to bring a spelling guide and a book such as the Harbrace College Handbook with you (which helps with essay structure, etc.).

This exam starts with a score of 100/100, and deducts a point for every error. You need a 70/100 to get a passing grade.

    Cheers,
    Mark

    English Comp

Hi - I just took the English comp test with excelsior - it was very hard. I highly recommend knowing your material WELL!! The computer testing was nothing like I'd expected. I'm not sure how well I did and the results take up to 45 days to receive. I'm on pins and needles while I wait.

Hi! I'm taking this exam next week and I'm kinda nervous. Did you get your score yet? What kind of preparation did you do for taking this exam? You recommend knowing your material well--what material are you referring to? I don't know how to study for this, other than learning how to cite! Any ideas?

Also, you say the computer testing was nothing like you expected. Had you taken any Excelsior exams before this one?

Hi. I take the ECE English Comp with Essay exam tomorrow. I used My Access! on ECE's website and scored above proficient on all the practice assigments I completed. I got all the suggested textbooks used off of eBay and read them...except I only skimmed parts of Sticks and Stones as that was a compliation of essays written by other college students to be used as a companion guide to the St. Martin's.

I am not so much worried about my writing per se, as I am the topics I will be given to write on...what if I'm not well-versed or it's horrible boring to me?

    Yikes!!

OMG! This was my final Excelsior exam...and it was a doozy! For the first time ever in my ECE history, I used all the time on the clock and feared I would run out...I actually needed more time!! My final essay I wasn't able to even proofread at all! And I was not familiar with the literary piece at all! I attempted to b.s. my way through it....I am hoping the first two essays will pull me through it. But, I don't know how they score...I have sent an email to the advisor asking for a back-up plan in case I fail. My results will be back in 45 days and at that time I will be in the midst of my CPNE. Virginia changed it's legislation regarding distance learning and anyone enrolled has to graduate by December or they will not be able to sit for boards. Even with a retake in Sept, if I can get a date with Prometric, Excelsior wants me to be done with all requirements by Oct 31st...no way I could get me score back on an english retake by then...

  17. Based upon your comments I doubt you will fail the exam - the reason I took the TECEP version way back when was more because the Excelsior version was known to give out "B" and "C" grades and I wanted to maintain a high GPA. If all you need is a pass you should be fine.

For your backup plan ask if the TECEP English Comp I will meet your requirements. It's 3 credit hours, so if you need more you can probably take something else like CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Literature to make up the difference.

I called Excelsior and asked if they could rush my grade along, and they did. I had my grade back in 2 weeks as opposed to 45 days because of the Virginia time crunch. I got a B! Whew!!! And I knew NOTHING about the last essay I was assigned...so note to all...the content may not be so valuable when the grade goes down as how WELL you write about it...the ability to articulate without error...fyi.
