I was reading another post about APUS and them working toward their regional accreditation.

I just wondered how often an institution recieved candidacy but then did not acheive complete accreditation? Is it common? Rare? Again, I refer to regional accreditation.

    Just wondering.

I don't know about the regional accrediting bodies, but the ABA recently refused full accreditation to Western State University Law School after five years of provisional accreditation. It does happen.

Let's take a look at DL schools failing to advance from candidacy:

International Graduate School. Offered short-residency doctoral programs from Missouri. Candidate with NCA. Folded in 1987.

Prometheus College. Candidate with Northeast Association. Folded in 1981.

Windsor University. Candidate with WASC. Folded in late 1970's, IIRC. (DL?)

And most recently, U.S. Open University. Spent a lot of money ($20M?) to enroll about 600 students. Folded just a couple of years ago. This one, however, likely would have been successful with Middle States had it decided to continue.

I think that's the list. It doesn't happen all that often with DL schools. I suspect it's because they're put through a lot more scrutiny before being granted candidacy in the first place, but I don't have any proof of that.

I would say that the odds are with APUS, especially since they've operated successfully for years with DETC accreditation.
