Renshaw's College

  1. Recently I got a couple questions about this entity, and did a little digging.

My findings -- along with answers to other questions -- are in an article at http://distancelearn.about.com/library/weekly/aa061501a.htm

Briefly... the website makes it sound as if this is an institution with a loooong history ("founded in 1890 during the reign of Queen Victoria as an educational centre for those aspiring to the highest academic standards of achievement"). But don't believe all you read.

There's no listing for Renshaw's in the International Centre for Distance Learning's database nor is it to be found on the website of Ireland's National Education & Research Network.

The website "press releases" page has a couple of items identified as an April 25, 1979 item from the Irish Times and a July 13, 1981 item from the Belfast Telegraph. I e-mailed both newspapers; a Belfast Telegraph reporter replied: "I have to say that I have never heard of the college and I have been covering education in Northern Ireland for two and a half years. I checked with the former education correspondent and he hasn't heard of it either. The college is also not even listed in the phone book which I find a bit strange and I found nothing in our newspaper's archives. There is a pub in Belfast called Renshaws - they may have some connection?"
