As I mentioned in another post, I am seeking to complete my bachelors degree as quick as possible for promotional purposes. It can be from an RA or an NA school in any discipline. I am considering CalCoast and Southwest University. Southwest has been accredited by DETC and there current tuition is substantially higher than CalCoast. I am debating on whether to take my chances that CalCoast will be granted accreditation and save approx $5,000 or go with Southwest. Any opinions would be truly appreciated. I have approx 70 credits with an A.S. from Excelsior College.
That's a tough question because I think the answer has to do with how risk adverse you are on this. Personally I was surprised when CCU didn't get approved last time. I'll still be surprised if they don't get approved next time but not as surprised as I was last time. We don't really know why they didn't make it before. CCU does seem dedicated to becoming DETC accredited though. GOOD LUCK and I wish you the best no matter what you decide.
If you want an NA accredited school you could try American Public University System (www.apus.edu). I am currently enrolled there in an AA degree programme and will likely continue on to a BA afterwards. The tuition is USD750.00 per 3-credit course (USD250.00 per credit hour) and for undergraduate degrees the books are including in the tuition.
That is a hard one. If I was in your situation, I would go for it. You can enroll and always decide to drop out and get a refund. I have never heard of anyone having a problem getting a refund from CCU.
I don't know what their refund policy is like but that might be an issue. It would be wise to wait until Jan 5th to see if they gain accreditation. I don't know how soon after they will raise their tuition but it might be something to call them about and discuss.
Randell1234, I noticed you completed your bachelors through CCU. Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to take my chances and enroll hoping and praying they do attain accreditation. It will truly save me lots of money compared to Southwest and other NA and RA schools. Is it possible to complete thier BS in management within a year if my 70 credits transfer and I am awarded credit for professional licenses and training certificates equal to 20 semester credits (90 total)? If so, how demanding are thier courses? Thanks.
Manny, Cal Coast appears to be doing the right things to qualify for DETC accreditation. However, there is no guarantee that it will happen. Rather than enrolling at Cal Coast and running the risk of having to withdraw and transfer to another school (which will likely not accept your Cal Coast work if it is unaccreditated), you may want to consider enrolling in an NA school. If Cal Coast becomes DETC accredited, then you should be able to transfer your credits to Cal Coast and finish there. If the DETC does not accredit Cal Coast, then you have not wasted your time with a program that you cannot use. Tony Pina Coordinator of Learning Technologies Northeastern Illinois University
Hello Forum Members, I have been considering California Coast University for the last month. I am just waiting until after the holidays to make my down payment. There is only about two weeks left, before DETC evaluates them. Hopefully we will know soon afterwards what the outcome will be. I would wait patiently before making any decision, because you could probably save a bunch of money. Also, I may receive allot of criticism, but please ignore many of the negative comments posted about California Coast University, they have been around for more than thirty years. And with the way distance education is going, I think they will be around allot longer. Sincerely, Ray1212
The trouble with waiting is the tuition is very likely to take a severe jump upward if they become accredited. Those enrolled before such an event often get their tuition locked at the lower rate.
Thanks for all the replies. I recently mailed copies of my transcripts for evaluation. If everything goes well and my credits along professional licenses and courses amount to approximately 90 credits, I'm taking a chance on their DETC accreditation and enrolling. Once again thank you all for your feedback.
Good Luck Manny! Good Luck Manny. And if for some reason there was a problem with them receiving accreditation in January, but I don't think there will be one, I believe many RA schools in the US will still admit you conditionally into a graduate program until you complete so many hours in their program.
