So I was looking for a distance learning institution to finish up my degree. Got sucked in by the seductive pitch at Breyer State. I have absolutely no idea about accreditation and what is legit or not. Luckily, I stumbled upon this board and all of my questions have been answered with one simple search. Now I have a little problem.

Here's the deal. I was within a few credit hours of finishing my Bachelors back in 93. Had to stop to take a job that I really couldn't pass up. Now I find myself regretting not having finished. I am a full time professional and cannot attend classes. My previous university has no online program and is therefore not an option. I have looked into tranfering my credits to another school but most require a minimum of 30 to 40 credit hours of actual course work regardless of how many hours you already have.

I want a legitimate degree but I don't want to toss away my time and money retaking classes for which I may already have received credit. Now that my Breyer State bubble has been burst, can anyone suggest a good and legit school that offers online programs with some sort of experience based credit where I might finalize my few remaining credits needed for my Bachelors.

A google search yields thousands of hits. Impossible to sift through the shady charachters. Thanks alot!

thanks for the info. BTW...what does it mean to earn credit via a portfolio? Is that credit for previous professional experience?

    thanks again

I want to thank all of you for your kind replies. This is EXACTLY what I was searching for. Now I can choose from a nice list of schools to earn a legitimate and recognized degree.

Thanks again! It's a bit overwhelming to sift through what is legit and what is not with a google search...

It is also very easy to fall into the trap of an illegitimate school. Good luck!

Another possibility is to contact the school you attended and explain your situation. Although they don't have a distance program they might accept credits that you accumulate from another school's program. Set-up a letter of agreement with them regarding which classes you need to take and from where you will take them. It's quite possible that they will allow you to transfer those credits from another school to finish your degree at the school where you already have most of your credits.
